   The look and feel of the mobile and desktop apps is almost no different, with translation into 41 languages being a big competitive advantage. The interface of the app looks modern and is rendered in dark blue shades throughout, a contrasting light look is not available.

   Avast SecureLine VPN offers quite a large number of features, navigating the app is made easier by dividing them into several categories. During our testing, we had no issues with stability or the app stuttering. Users are informed about everything important by notifications.

   In the settings, you can activate the automatic launch of the app after the device boots up, including the connection to the VPN. The servers in the list are categorized by features and continents, which makes navigation and selection easier. Unfortunately, it is not possible to save locations as favorites to access them faster.

   The Avast SecureLine VPN app is equipped with a kill switch feature that automatically disconnects the device from the internet if the connection to the VPN server is interrupted. This prevents the user’s real IP address from being revealed. In addition, there is a whitelist function that allows you to specify websites and applications that will not connect via the VPN.

   Other features include the ability to select trusted wi-fi networks where the VPN will not be used. The app can allow VPN-enabled access to local devices such as a printer. Avast SecureLine VPN also offers a blacklist, which for selected apps and websites ensures that the VPN is always activated when you visit them. All of the features offered are available in both the desktop and mobile apps.

   We measured the transfer speeds of Avast SecureLine VPN repeatedly over several days, and the values below are their average. The measurements show that the app slightly reduces connection speeds.

   The download speed of 92 Mb/s allows playing 4k videos and downloading bulky files. Ultra-high resolution video playback requires a download speed of at least 50 Mbps.

   The average measured upload speed of 68 Mb/s is sufficient for torrenting and for backing up data to the cloud. Still, the best VPNs achieve significantly higher speeds, such as FastestVPN, where we measured an average upload of 254 Mb/s.

   The last parameter monitored is response speed, which plays a significant role during video calls or online gaming. With Avast SecureLine VPN we measured an average response time of 11 ms, which can be described as top-notch. Although the response time was worse for connections to remote servers, it would still be sufficient for all internet activities by a wide margin. For response speed, lower is always better.

   The Avast SecureLine VPN network consists of 700 servers in 36 countries. In the context of the other VPNs reviewed, it can be described as below average, but it did not have a negative impact on the quality of the connection and the speeds achieved.

   Most of the Avast SecureLine VPN servers are located in Europe, with at least one on each continent. The available locations include Finland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa.

   Avast SecureLine VPN also operates servers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Of the countries with censored internet, Turkey is represented.

   Some of the servers in operation are optimised for streaming and torrent downloads and can be found in the app under the appropriate category. The list of servers is further sorted by continent. All available features and protocols are supported on all servers in all locations.

   There is no way to tell which servers are physical and which are only virtual in the server list. A specific feature of virtual servers is that the hardware is physically located in a different country than the one listed in the application. This can cause problems when bypassing geo-locked content, as some sites detect the location of the physical server.

   The core security feature of Avast SecureLine VPN is DNS leak protection, which prevents the user’s real IP address from being revealed. In our testing, there were no leaks and we were assured of anonymity.

   Another important feature is the implemented kill switch, which disconnects the device from the Internet when the connection to the VPN server fails. This prevents the possible disclosure of the user’s real IP address and location.

   Avast SecureLine VPN supports three different security protocols. The most advanced protocol available is WireGuard, which excels in the high speed and simplicity of its code. The widely recognized OpenVPN standard and the Mimic protocol, which Avast was behind the development of, are also available.

   All transmitted data is protected by 256-bit AES encryption, which is complemented by the ChaCha20 standard for WireGuard.

   Multi-hop connectivity, for which the term Double VPN is sometimes used, is unavailable. Its principle is to connect via two different VPN servers simultaneously, so that if the first layer of protection fails, a second layer protects the user. The disadvantage can be lower transfer speeds. Multi-hop is offered, for example, by Atlas VPN Pro or Proton VPN Plus.

   Avast SecureLine VPN also does not support server connections via Tor. The Avast SecureLine VPN user account can be protected by two-factor password verification.

   Avast SecureLine VPN runs servers specifically optimized for unblocking streaming video.

   In our test, the VPN achieved mixed results when it managed to unblock the US libraries of Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video. Despite repeated attempts, we were unable to access movies from Disney Plus, HBO Max and Hulu.

   Streaming platforms usually combat VPN use by banning accesses from their IP addresses. One reason for this is that they don’t hold the copyright for playing shows in certain regions. Sometimes in such cases, disconnecting from the server and reconnecting again can help. This may change the IP address to a different one that is no longer among the blocked ones.

   Our download speed of 92 Mb/s was sufficient for playing 4k videos with a margin. For this, the minimum required limit is 50 Mbps.

   We recommend choosing NordVPN, Surfshark or CyberGhost VPN for seamless unblocking of movies and TV shows from all platforms. All three VPNs managed to unblock all platforms tested, achieving above-average speeds and adding premium security features on top.

   Avast SecureLine VPN doesn’t offer any extra features to complement the VPN itself. The app lacks the ability to block ads, malware, and trackers.

   The camouflage mode allows you to disguise the VPN as a regular connection. It makes it impossible for an ISP or website operators to detect an active VPN, which is useful in countries where its use is undesirable, for example. Avast SecureLine VPN instead supports its own Mimic protocol, with which similar results can be achieved.

   Static IP addresses are not available with Avast SecureLine VPN. Additional services such as antivirus, update manager, battery optimizer and more can be purchased for an additional fee.

    The Avast SecureLine VPN application did not negatively impact computer performance during use. Most VPN applications are generally developed in such a way that they do not limit the convenience for use in any way.

    When you click the crosshair, the application still runs in the background, CPU usage is reduced and only RAM is still used. The application can be turned off completely via the icon in the system tray, where a brief menu with the most common settings is available at the same time.
