GhostPath VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 4 Pros

GhostPath VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 4 Pros

7.4
★★★☆
  1. GhostPath VPN Offers Multi-Hop, Ip Rotation and Advanced OpenVPN Settings

    • Only 129 servers available
    • Failed to unblock Amazon Prime, HBO and Disney+
    • Outdated app is only available for Windows and macOS
    • Operator is based in the US, a member country of the 5 Eyes alliance
    • Offers multi-hop connectivity
    • Above average download (130 Mb/s) and upload (105 Mb/s) speeds
    • Offers IP address rotation feature
    • Advanced OpenVPN setup option

GhostPath VPN is operated by the American company Ghost Path, Inc. In our test, the service scored 7.4/10, which ranks it #30 among the 90 VPNs we tested. The best subscription price is $2.91 per month.

GhostPath VPN‘s weakness is its small network of servers, of which users only have 129. The limited server supply can reduce connection speeds or cause annoying outages.

GhostPath VPN also lost points in the ratings due to low support for unblocking streaming platforms. In our test, we were only able to access video from Netflix and YouTube.

Another drawback of GhostPath VPN is the outdated and not very reliable app, which is only directly available for Windows and Mac. On mobile devices, users have to rely on third-party apps like TunnelBlick or OpenVPN. For security on Android, iOS and other mobile devices, we recommend prioritizing NordVPN or Surfshark, which offer custom solutions on both platforms.

GhostPath VPN has the advantage of some extra features, such as multi-hop connectivity to amplify protection or IP address rotation to make tracing the origin of the signal more difficult. Coupled with solid download speeds of 130 Mb/s and upload speeds of 105 Mb/s, GhostPath VPN is also usable for torrenting.

To secure your traffic, GhostPath VPN uses the proven OpenVPN protocol and 256-bit encryption. Users are thus reliably protected against possible data leaks. In addition, more experienced users can take advantage of the advanced OpenVPN protocol settings.

One GhostPath VPN subscription allows simultaneous use on only 5 devices, in the context of the other services reviewed, this is below average. For example, Surfshark can be used on 999 devices simultaneously.

Cross-platform support is a big disappointment with GhostPath VPN. The native app is only available for Windows and macOS computers.

For Android and iOS mobile devices, you need to use a third-party app, which reduces the ease of use and can pose a security risk. Instructions for installing and using the client can be found on the GhostPath VPN website.

GhostPath VPN can also be used on select brands of routers, making it easy to protect all devices connected to the same network. Directly supported platforms do not include Linux, Playstation and Xbox gaming consoles, or Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, and Roku smart TVs.

The GhostPath VPN extension does not exist for any of the web browsers. Much better cross-platform support is provided by NordVPN, for example, which can be used on almost all common devices.

  4. GhostPath VPN App: User-Friendliness, Whitelist, Server Selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

The GhostPath VPN app is only directly available for Windows and Mac platforms. They don’t differ much in appearance or features, with English being the only supported language. The app’s interface is fairly clear, but visually outdated. The only available theme is dark.

The home screen of the app displays the username, a connect button and a brief listing of connection history. In the upper right corner is the current IP address and its location.

You can sort the servers in the list by several parameters and save any of them as a favorite. Optionally, you can activate the function of automatic start of the application and connection to the VPN after the device boots, in which case the nearest available location is selected.

Starting the app was slow compared to other VPNs, the same goes for connecting to servers. In addition, there was often an error and the app had to be restarted. An advantage in case of troubleshooting with technical support is the ability to download a complete log of the activities that the application performed. Log storage can be optionally deactivated.

GhostPath VPN offers some advanced features, the principle of which may not always be obvious, so you need to do some research. Simple descriptions explaining the benefit of the feature could make it easier.

Among the missing features of GhostPath VPN is whitelisting, which allows you to select apps and websites that will connect directly to the internet even when VPN protection is activated.

Optionally, GhostPath VPN can activate the storage of the history of used servers, where the IP address is recorded along with the location. Although this feature is disabled by default, it does store a history of internet activity, reducing the level of privacy.

External applications for mobile devices vary depending on the platform used. GhostPath VPN supports several of them, and a brief setup guide is available for each of them.

  5. GhostPath VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Like all paid VPNs, GhostPath VPN doesn’t limit users in the amount of data transferred.

GhostPath VPN states on the website that it offers the fastest connection among VPNs. Although it’s not exactly among the fastest services by our measurements, it has nothing to be ashamed of for the figures it achieves. Since VPNs don’t give the user the option to automatically choose the fastest location, we measured the speed on several servers with the lowest distance from our actual location.

The average download speed reached 130 Mb/s, which is highly sufficient for playing 4k videos and downloading bulky files. GhostPath VPN achieved higher speeds than most reviewed VPNs.

The measured upload speed of 105 Mb/s is also very good, which you can use for anonymous sharing of large files or torrenting, for example.

The low response time is an important parameter for example for computer game players or for video calls. We measured an average response time of 36 ms for GhostPath VPN, which is sufficient for all common activities. With response speed, a lower value is always better.

  6. GhostPath VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      129
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      41
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇲🇩 Moldova 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇷🇸 Serbia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇵🇦 Panama 🇺🇸 USA
South America 🇧🇷 Brazil 🇨🇱 Chile
    Asia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇩 Indonesia 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇷🇺 Russia 🇸🇬 Singapore 🇹🇭 Thailand
    Africa
    Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia

GhostPath VPN gives users a choice of 129 servers in 41 countries. Compared to the competition, this is a below-average offering. For example, Surfshark operates 3,200 servers in 97 different locations.

Traditionally, most of GhostPath VPN‘s servers are located in Europe, with Asia also very well represented. Less common countries include Estonia, Iceland, Luxembourg, Brazil, Chile, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Coverage of Africa is completely lacking.

Among the locations available are the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia. Of the countries with Internet censorship, Russia and Turkey are represented.

Some GhostPath VPN servers are labeled “Core”, their advantage is supposed to be higher stability. The list of sites can be sorted by city name, country or by the number of servers involved. Popular sites can be moved up in the list. A map of available servers can be viewed in the app, but it is not interactive, so clicking on the countries shown will not connect.

GhostPath VPN does not operate any dedicated servers for torrenting or streaming, for example.

  7. GhostPath VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      Yes
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

GhostPath VPN has DNS protection implemented. We tested the app for possible DNS and IP leaks, and in both cases none of our real data was leaked.

The kill switch feature is available under the name “IP And DNS Leak Protection”. If you activate it, GhostPath VPN will automatically disconnect your device from the internet when the VPN protection is breached to prevent your data from being leaked.

By default, GhostPath VPN uses OpenVPN UDP or OpenVPN TCP protocols, which are generally popular due to their variability. Additionally, you can manually switch to the older IPSec protocol in the Mac app. All of these protocols are reliable. Support for the state-of-the-art WireGuard standard is lacking, with the advantage of simplicity and high speed.

OpenVPN protects the transmitted data with 256-bit AES encryption, which is the most advanced on the market and is considered virtually unbreakable. IPSec uses less reliable and less demanding 128-bit encryption.

An advanced security feature of GhostPath VPN is multi-hop, which routes connections through multiple servers simultaneously, reducing the risk of tracing the original signal. GhostPath VPN uses the “Plex” designation for it, you can find it in the server menu. The disadvantages of multi-hop connections tend to be lower speeds and slower response times, as the data has to travel a longer distance.

Connecting to the Tor network is not supported with GhostPath VPN. Also missing is the ability to secure your user account login with two-factor authentication, where a code from the mobile app is required along with a password.

Experienced users can use the Advanced tab of GhostPath VPN to enter custom instructions and parameters for the OpenVPN protocol. All instructions must be entered 100% correctly, as any errors will cause the entire VPN to malfunction.

  8. GhostPath VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      No
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      No
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      No
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      No
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

GhostPath VPN is unsuitable for unblocking streaming platforms. In our test, it was only able to access Netflix and YouTube’s foreign libraries.

For other platforms, GhostPath VPN was unsuccessful. Amazon Prime Video detected that we had an active VPN connection and wouldn’t let us play the video. The Disney Plus VPN either detected and prevented playback several times, or didn’t register the location change at all. HBO and Hulu didn’t work with the GhostPath VPN at all.

The measured download speed of 130 Mb/s is sufficient for playing 4k video when 50 Mbps is generally quoted as the minimum required. For unblocking streaming platforms, we recommend choosing NordVPN, Surfshark or CyberGhost VPN. All three services have managed to unblock all streaming platforms, their speeds allow you to watch movies and series in ultra-high definition, and on top of that they add an excellent level of security.

  9. Features of GhostPath VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

The GhostPath VPN app does not support ad blocking, tracker blocking, or malware blocking. It also lacks the “Obfuscation” feature aka camouflage mode, which can hide the activated VPN from the ISP and website operators.

The most interesting of GhostPath VPN‘s extra features is the automatic IP address rotation. It makes it more difficult to track your real location as it changes regularly. You can optionally set how often the IP address changes.

GhostPath VPN also offers the option to choose your location based on server load. In the app, you can set up either a random connection or automatic server selection based on its current load, which should help stabilize and speed up your connection. You can measure the speed on individual servers directly in the app. The displayed values fairly accurately replicated the speeds measured through the external application.

A dedicated IP address is not available for free or for an additional fee with GhostPath VPN. The advantage of a dedicated address is that it is dedicated to a single user. For example, Surfshark offers it.

There is no data leak monitoring on the dark web or any other extra features.

  10. GhostPath VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

Like most apps, GhostPath VPN doesn’t overload your computer to the point where it negatively impacts your use of it. It took only 0.2% of the processor capacity of the Macbook Air, 0.5% of the battery capacity, and only 55 MB of RAM, which is negligible for today’s computers.

To optimize the computer’s performance and to make it start up faster, you can disable automatic application startup. We also recommend disabling the automatic connection to the VPN after the application starts. You can exit it completely via the icon in the system tray.

  11. GhostPath VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

GhostPath VPN does not operate any servers specifically optimized for P2P file sharing. According to customer support, torrenting is possible on all servers involved. Servers labeled “Core” offer the best stability.

The measured download (130 Mb/s) and upload (105 Mb/s) values make GhostPath VPN a suitable service for torrenting. Moreover, there were no DNS and IP address leaks during our test, which kept our identity secret.

GhostPath VPN‘s terms of use state that the service cannot be used for illegal purposes. Sharing copyrighted files is one of the illegal activities. The company reserves the right to terminate a user’s account without refund if illegal activities are detected.

  12. What Is the Country of Origin Of GhostPath VPN?

    • VPN Provider: GhostPath, Inc.
    • Country of origin: 🇺🇸 USA

The service provider is Ghost Path, Inc. which is based in Waycross, Georgia, USA. Founded in 2012, the company has focused exclusively on operating VPNs since its inception.

The company’s US headquarters may pose a risk to some users, as the country is a member of the 5 Eyes group. The secret services and police of these countries monitor users’ internet activities and may demand the release of information if illegal activity is suspected. VPN operators are obliged to comply with the request in such cases.

GhostPath VPN states that it does not collect any data on users, so it has nothing to hand over in case of a challenge.

  13. GhostPath VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

GhostPath VPN states on its website that no logs are generated when using the service. Thus, no information is collected about connection times, data volumes transferred, websites visited or device identifiers.

However, GhostPath VPN has never undergone an independent audit to confirm or deny these claims. To date, there have been no reported leaks of GhostPath VPN user data.

The GhostPath VPN operator only stores data about users that is necessary to maintain the user account. This includes email address, name and payment details, which are stored with an external payment company. All data is encrypted before it is stored.

According to the privacy policy, the company may share the collected data with third parties, mainly marketing and analytics service providers. Data may also be shared in the event of a sale of the company or in the event of a legitimate request for data from government authorities.

GhostPath VPN does not issue a Transparency Report or Warrant Canary to warn users against data release.

Overall, GhostPath VPN can be considered a secure service. Our confidence in it would be further bolstered by undergoing an independent audit, which NordVPN or Proton VPN Plus, for example, undergo on a regular basis.

  14. GhostPath VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

GhostPath VPN customer support is available via email at help@ghostpath.com and also by phone, which is rather exceptional among VPNs. The contact phone number is in the US, so calling from abroad can get expensive.

Support can also be contacted via the chat icon on the GhostPath VPN website. We were never able to reach a support staff member online, the reply to the email we entered always took a few hours to arrive.

There’s also a knowledgebase, answers to frequently asked questions, and a Troubleshooting section where you can find solutions to the most common problems associated with logging in and activating the VPN.

  15. GhostPath VPN FAQ

    Is GhostPath VPN secure?
During our testing of GhostPath VPN, we have not experienced any security or privacy issues. GhostPath VPN uses the reliable OpenVPN protocol and 256-bit encryption that is virtually unbreakable. The service has advanced multi-hop security features and IP address rotation.

No logs are generated when using GhostPath VPN. Thus, the weaknesses are its US-based location and lack of security auditing.

    Is GhostPath VPN free?
GhostPath VPN is a paid service, the price of the most affordable subscription option is $2.91 per month. There is no trial version of GhostPath VPN or a free alternative with limited features, for example.

To try GhostPath VPN, we recommend subscribing to the service and then taking advantage of the 30 days of money-back guarantee. You can subscribe to GhostPath VPN for a month or, more conveniently, for a full year in advance.

    Can GhostPath VPN unlock Netflix?
GhostPath VPN was able to unblock Netflix’s US content after testing several servers. It did just as well unblocking content from YouTube.

However, GhostPath VPN failed on the remaining streaming platforms. We couldn’t unblock video from Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO, or Hulu. We recommend choosing one of the best VPNs for streaming to access foreign movies and TV shows. We recommend NordVPN or CyberGhost VPN.
