The Proton VPN Plus desktop app is clear and simple to use. It feels almost like a flawless product, which is what Express VPN prides itself on. Android and iOS mobile apps have a well-designed interface with many handy extras to make the user’s experience more enjoyable.
The apps are available in 20 languages, with English among them.
In the Proton VPN Plus application, the whitelist function can be used to select websites and applications on which the VPN will not be used.
In addition to the standard features, Proton VPN Plus offers the possibility to create custom user accounts, select the server country based on your current location, and connect automatically. To achieve the maximum level of privacy, the Secure Core feature can be activated to ensure data transfer over servers with extra security.
Connection speed and traffic for Proton VPN Plus
- Traffic limit: Unlimited
Download speed
Upload speed
Server latency
Proton VPN Plus, like all paid VPNs, does not limit users to a data transfer limit.
In testing Proton VPN Plus, we achieved average download speeds of 203 Mb/s and upload speeds of 109 Mb/s. Compared to the other VPNs reviewed, this is quite a significant improvement over the average. We measured server response speeds on average 207 ms.
We achieved better results when connecting to servers close to our location. Connection speeds to more distant servers were generally lower but were still above average in the context of other VPNs in use. Connection speeds to more remote servers are generally always lower.
Connection speeds were also negatively affected by the activation of Secure Core; this is a tax for the extra level of security.

Among the countries offered are the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Although Proton’s size makes it a medium-sized VPN provider, it can be considered a very good value.
It has more than Proton VPN Plus servers on offer than 3,064, which puts it in the average range. The highest selection of 9,264 servers available is offered by CyberGhost VPN.
However, for normal use, the number of servers Proton VPN Plus is sufficient. We did not observe any stability problems or speed fluctuations during our tests. In addition, the operator is particularly concerned about security and privacy.
Security at Proton VPN Plus: DNS protection, kill switch…
- DNS leak protection : YesDNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
- Kill Switch: YesKill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
- Multi-Hop: YesMulti-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.

Proton VPN Plus is one of the services with the highest emphasis on user privacy and security. The application offers DNS protection, and in case of a detected leak, the visited sites can be traced back.
The Tor protocol is also supported, allowing anonymous communication and browsing of websites. Unlike other providers, Proton VPN Plus does not collect any logs of user activity; only login attempts are recorded.
All versions of Proton VPN Plus have a kill switch feature that immediately disconnects the user from the Internet if a VPN connection failure is detected. However, the kill switch must first be activated in the application.
For a significant increase in privacy, Proton VPN Plus offers a multi-hop feature where the connection is daisy-chained through two different servers. The trade-off for security is a slight slowdown in connection speed.
The Proton VPN Plus profiles itself as an extremely secure VPN, as demonstrated by its own Secure Core feature. This finds particular use when connecting through jurisdictions that are not friendly to user privacy.
Secure Core routes all traffic through Proton’s network of servers first, making it significantly more difficult to trace a user’s path Proton VPN Plus. Even if an attacker monitors traffic on servers in, for example, the US, he will not be able to trace the actual IP address and location of the user. In the extreme case, he can only access Proton’s servers.
The range of supported protocols includes OpenVPN TCP, OpenVPN UDP, and IKEv2/IPsec. The selection of protocols may seem inadequate compared to the competition, but Proton VPN Plus has supplemented it with additional security features to ensure maximum user security.

While testing Proton VPN Plus, we managed to unblock the US streaming of Netflix, HBO, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. However, in some cases, we were unsuccessful the first time and had to choose another server from the menu.
Connection speed and stability varied depending on the distance of the server chosen. The initial loading of the stream took a longer time, but subsequent playback of the stream and scrolling in the video was already smooth. Throughout our testing, connection speeds exceeded the 50 MB/s threshold stated as necessary for 4K video playback.

The Proton VPN Plus application offers a large number of basic and added features to ensure complete protection and uninterrupted browsing. Some of the basic features offered include blocking ads, malware, and trackers.
The Proton VPN Plus also offers a multi-hop feature where the VPN connects through two different servers at the same time. This increases the user’s protection while at the same time not knowing that a VPN is being used. The Secure Core feature, developed by the operator Proton VPN Plus, also increases security during use. Its principle is to use servers with special security.
In the event of a loss of connection with the VPN, Proton VPN Plus offers a kill switch function that immediately disconnects the user from the Internet, thus preventing data compromise. However, the feature must first be activated in the app.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) login is available via a third-party authentication application. It must be installed on the device before the feature can be activated.
The premium version of Unlimited adds a few extras over Proton VPN Plus in addition to all these benefits:
- Proton Mail can send and receive encrypted emails.
- Proton Calendar offers 20 separate calendars with end-to-end encryption.
- Proton Drive is encrypted storage that can hold up to 500GB of data. Even data that is not normally encrypted can be protected.
- Drive Plus connects these services.
Load on a computer with Proton VPN Plus
The Proton VPN Plus application has higher than average device performance requirements compared to its competitors. Despite this, we did not experience any computer slowdown when using the VPN.
The computer load also depends on the application’s own settings. For example, the automatic connection to servers or the activated Secure Core feature increases it.
