   In testing Proton VPN Plus, we achieved average download speeds of 203 Mb/s and upload speeds of 109 Mb/s. Compared to the other VPNs reviewed, this is quite a significant improvement over the average. We measured server response speeds on average 207 ms.

   We achieved better results when connecting to servers close to our location. Connection speeds to more distant servers were generally lower but were still above average in the context of other VPNs in use. Connection speeds to more remote servers are generally always lower.

   Connection speeds were also negatively affected by the activation of Secure Core; this is a tax for the extra level of security.

   Secure Core routes all traffic through Proton’s network of servers first, making it significantly more difficult to trace a user’s path Proton VPN Plus. Even if an attacker monitors traffic on servers in, for example, the US, he will not be able to trace the actual IP address and location of the user. In the extreme case, he can only access Proton’s servers.

   The range of supported protocols includes OpenVPN TCP, OpenVPN UDP, and IKEv2/IPsec. The selection of protocols may seem inadequate compared to the competition, but Proton VPN Plus has supplemented it with additional security features to ensure maximum user security.

   While testing Proton VPN Plus, we managed to unblock the US streaming of Netflix, HBO, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. However, in some cases, we were unsuccessful the first time and had to choose another server from the menu.

   Connection speed and stability varied depending on the distance of the server chosen. The initial loading of the stream took a longer time, but subsequent playback of the stream and scrolling in the video was already smooth. Throughout our testing, connection speeds exceeded the 50 MB/s threshold stated as necessary for 4K video playback.
