VyprVPN 2024 Review: 2 Cons and 6 Pros

VyprVPN 2024 Review: 2 Cons and 6 Pros

7.6
★★★☆
  1. VyprVPN Has Servers in Exotic Locations

    • Compared to the best VPNs, it has a lower transfer speed
    • Small number of servers (only 700)
    • Servers are available in exotic locations
    • Quality technical support around the clock
    • Does not store usage logs
    • Uses its own Chameleon protocol
    • May not disguise VPN traffic as normal connections
    • Unblocked US Netflix and other streaming platforms

VyprVPN is worth considering if you’re serious about protecting your online privacy. The Swiss company behind the service is Golden Frog, GmbH, and operates it through its US-registered subsidiaries Certida LLC and Giganews, Inc. The headquarters of the parent company is in Switzerland, and the “no logs policy” and the security audit significantly contribute to the security of the service.

Technical support is an advantage, available 24/7 via chat. VyprVPN has proven itself in unblocking foreign content streaming services. The app is available on a fairly wide range of devices and is simple to use. Security features include a kill switch and whitelist settings, and advanced DNS protection can also be utilized.

Protocols supported by VyprVPN include Wireguard and Chameleon’s own solution built on OpenVPN, which can hide VPN usage from the ISP.

Although VyprVPN ranks as an above-average VPN with a score of 7.6/10, it falls short compared to the best services in some ways. VyprVPN lacks multi-hop functionality, which routes connections through two servers simultaneously, ensuring maximum anonymity. Compared to NordVPN or Surfshark, VyprVPN has significantly fewer servers, and the subscription price is higher.

  2. VyprVPN Subscription: Discount Code, Free Trial, Money Back Guarantee…

    • Your Price: $15.0044% off  $8.33 /mo (10 devices)
    • Money Back Guarantee: Yes (30 days)
    • Free Trial: No
    • Cryptocurrency payments:
      No
      Bitcoin :No
      Dash :No
      Ethereum :No
      Ripple :No

VyprVPN offers two subscription options: the first with monthly billing, and the second annually with full payment upfront. The full-year subscription is more cost-effective, with a monthly charge of $8.33.

The free option of VyprVPN is not offered. A — of trial version is only available via the mobile app, obtained through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

All subscribers can take advantage of a 30 days of money-back guarantee. Refunds can be requested through technical support without giving any reason.

Payment for VyprVPN subscription fees is possible by debit and credit card, via PayPal, and when downloading the app to a mobile device, via Google Pay and Apple Pay. In this case, the refund process is more complicated, as it requires contacting Google and Apple directly. Cryptocurrency payment is not available to ensure better anonymity.

With one subscription, VyprVPN can be used on a maximum of 10 devices simultaneously. This value is sufficient for most users.

The VyprVPN app is available for Windows, macOS, Linux desktop devices, and Android and iOS mobile devices.

The VyprVPN app can be used on Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Kodi, smart NAS storage, and Chromebook devices. In these cases, slightly specific VPN installation is required, detailed in the tutorials. For users of these devices, getting the service up and running shouldn’t be a problem.

Additionally, the VPN supports operation on Tomato, Asus, and DD-WRT routers. Tutorials on the VyprVPN website detail the configuration to install on the router to protect the entire household. The router counts as one device in the allowed quota.

Xbox and Playstation gaming consoles and Apple TV and Roku smart TVs are not supported. Devices can be protected by installing VyprVPN on the router, where all devices connected to the same network are protected.

Browser extensions are not offered by VyprVPN, although technical support says they are in development.

  4. VyprVPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +12 more🇪🇸 Spanish 🇷🇺 Russian 🇩🇪 German 🇹🇷 Turkish 🇵🇹 Portuguese 🇫🇷 French 🇮🇹 Italian 🇦🇪 Arabic 🇯🇵 Japanese 🇳🇱 Dutch 🇨🇳 Chinese 🇰🇷 Korean
    • Whitelisting:
      Yes
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

VyprVPN is available in 13 languages. The application is quite simple to use and easy to understand even for less experienced users.

The desktop app of VyprVPN offers significantly more features than the smartphone app. Dark mode, which would help save users’ eyes, is not available.

A useful feature is a whitelist for Wi-Fi networks where VPN security is not necessary. The whitelist works on the same principle to classify applications on which the VPN will either always be active or inactive.

Site selection is done manually from a list that can be sorted by country or by region. You can set up automatic connection to the VPN when the computer boots up or automatic reconnection in the event of an unexpected outage. VyprVPN also allows you to set up notifications associated with connections or outages.

  5. VyprVPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Like other paid services, VyprVPN does not limit users by the amount of data transferred. The app can display detailed connection information including the amount of data downloaded and uploaded for reference.

Establishing a connection to the VyprVPN servers took a few seconds, even for locations on the other side of the world. A functional automatic connection to the fastest server is missing. The desktop app does have this option, but it only redirects the user to a list of available sites.

When testing the data transfer speed, we achieved an average download value of 98 Mb/s. Compared to other VPNs in our database, this is slightly above average. The measured value would be easily enough to download bulky files and watch streaming video in 4K resolution.

The measured upload speed of 70 Mb/s ranks VyprVPN among the average VPN services.

The average response speed was 46 ms, which is good enough for gaming, for example, although the top VPNs offer significantly better values. For example, with AdGuard VPN, we achieved an average response value of 7 ms in repeated measurements. For response, as opposed to transfer rates, a lower value is better.

  6. VyprVPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      700
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      64
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇵🇦 Panama 🇸🇻 El Salvador 🇺🇸 USA
South America 🇧🇷 Brazil 🇦🇷 Argentina 🇨🇴 Colombia 🇺🇾 Uruguay
    Asia 🇧🇭 Bahrain 🇵🇭 Philippines 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇩 Indonesia 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇶🇦 Qatar 🇲🇴 Macao 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇲🇻 Maldives 🇵🇰 Pakistan 🇷🇺 Russia 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia 🇸🇬 Singapore 🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates 🇹🇭 Thailand 🇹🇼 Taiwan 🇻🇳 Vietnam
    Africa 🇩🇿 Algeria 🇪🇬 Egypt
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇲🇭 Marshall Islands 🇳🇿 New Zealand

VyprVPN offers 700 servers in 64 countries. While the number of servers is below average compared to other services, the range of countries is very good.

Europe and Asia have traditionally had the widest representation, but VyprVPN servers are present on all continents. Among the available locations are the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Some exotic locations by VPN standards include the Marshall Islands, El Salvador, Qatar, Algeria, and the Maldives. Of the countries with state censorship, VyprVPN has servers in Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

VyprVPN operates its network without an intermediary, so there is no risk of loss of privacy through a third party. The servers don’t have RAM memory that gets wiped every time they reboot or shut down, a feature that has become popular with VPN providers in recent years.

However, some of the servers in operation are virtual. Such a server is physically located in a different country than it outwardly presents itself as. This reduces the risk of seizure of servers in countries with authoritarian regimes but can cause problems for some services tied to geolocation.

Servers designed specifically for torrenting or streaming video are not available, but VyprVPN does not restrict this type of traffic on any server.

For each site in the app, you can find the current speed to help you choose the fastest server. You can also sort the sites by country or region and save them to your favorites.

  7. VyprVPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

VyprVPN has implemented advanced DNS protection designed specifically for users of the service. There were no DNS leaks during our testing.

Security when using the application is enhanced by the kill switch feature, which disconnects the device from the Internet in case the connection to the VPN server is lost. This will not reveal the user’s real IP address, location, or compromise the data being transmitted. The kill switch is a standard feature of all good VPNs.

Missing from the supported features is multi-hop, also known as Double VPN. Its working principle is to connect through two different VPN servers simultaneously, increasing the level of security.

VyprVPN uses several proven protocols for transmission. There’s the proven OpenVPN and IKEv2, used by a number of VPN services. VyprVPN also offers the modern and fast Wireguard, and it has developed its own Chameleon protocol.

Chameleon is based on the OpenVPN protocol and offers the highest anonymity. For example, it supports the “Obfuscation” feature, which masquerades the VPN as a regular connection. This makes the protocol suitable for use in countries with high levels of internet censorship.

To secure data transmissions, VyprVPN uses 256-bit AES encryption, considered a security standard in the market and also used by banks. VyprVPN also offers OpenVPN configurations with a lower level of security, which have the advantage of requiring lower computer performance.

Two-factor security is missing when logging into a VyprVPN user account.

  8. VyprVPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

With VyprVPN, we were able to unblock streaming from all platforms tested. We were successful with US Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Max, and Hulu. Playback was smooth, with no video stuttering.

The download speed of 98 Mb/s measured at VyprVPN is sufficient for 4K video playback. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is generally stated as necessary.

VyprVPN is suitable for streaming video despite not having any servers specifically optimized for this type of traffic.

If you experience difficulty unblocking content, try turning VyprVPN off and back on again. This will change the IP address, which is often sufficient to resolve the issue. Streaming services fight with VPN providers and often block selected IP addresses. The VyprVPN website has tutorials on how to connect to streaming services in case of difficulties.

  9. Features of VyprVPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

The VyprVPN application cannot block ads, malware, or trackers.

An interesting feature of VyprVPN is “Obfuscation”, which masks the active VPN connection from the ISP. On the surface, it looks like normal traffic, making it very difficult to detect activated VPN protection. Obfuscation is available through the use of VyprVPN‘s custom protocol called Chameleon.

Some competing services offer a password manager or antivirus in addition to the VPN, which can be purchased as part of a convenient package. You won’t find any of these options with VyprVPN. There is also no monitoring of personal data leaked to the dark web and no warning of its possible misuse.

Static or dedicated IP addresses are not offered by VyprVPN, even for an additional fee.

  10. VyprVPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

VPN applications are usually developed to have minimal impact on computer performance and not restrict the user from using the device. This was not entirely the case with VyprVPN, where measured load values were higher than with other reviewed VPNs.

During use, VyprVPN used 220 MB of available RAM. This value shouldn’t cause problems for modern computers, but for example, NordVPN achieved significantly lower values during our testing.

Of the computing power on the test MacBook Air, VyprVPN used approximately 3%, which is also higher than what is common for similar applications. We also saw similarly above-average numbers for power consumption. On disk, the VyprVPN application occupied around 80 MB, which can be considered a normal value.

  11. VyprVPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

VyprVPN can be used for torrenting without any restrictions. The VyprVPN knowledge base literally says that the operator treats P2P sharing like any other way of using a VPN and does not block it in any way.

Torrent traffic is supported by all VyprVPN servers, but none of them are directly optimized for this type of traffic. You should not abuse a VPN for illegal activities such as transmitting copyrighted works. While VyprVPN will hide the user’s real IP address when torrenting, copyright infringement may still occur.

Both the download speed (98 Mb/s) and upload speed (70 Mb/s) are sufficient for transferring bulky files. Supported clients include uTorrent and BitTorrent.

  12. What is the country of origin of VyprVPN?

    • VPN Provider: Golden Frog, GmbH
    • Country of origin: 🇨🇭 Switzerland

The operator of VyprVPN is Golden Frog, GmbH, based in Lucerne, Switzerland. The VPN is operated through its US-registered subsidiaries Certida LLC and Giganews, Inc.

Switzerland is not a member of any alliance of countries that share user intelligence among themselves. If you are located in the European Union, you are subject to the GDPR data handling regulation under the VyprVPN privacy policy. The service provider is not legally obliged to share user data with government organizations; this can only happen after a court order is submitted.

VyprVPN does not store any user activity on the Internet. Its “No-logs Policy” has also been verified by an independent audit. If the operator receives a request to release personal data, it has nothing to release except the name and email address.

  13. VyprVPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

VyprVPN states on its site that it does not store any logs of user activity. This claim is confirmed by an independent audit by Leviathan Security, which revealed only minor flaws that the VPN operator promptly corrected. The audit was conducted back in 2018, and it would be advisable for the service to undergo audits on a regular basis for greater credibility.

The company states in its privacy policy that it does not store any information about the sites visited, IP addresses, connection time, and does not sell user data to third parties.

VyprVPN does not use third-party servers, eliminating the risk of another company tracking your activity. For cost optimization reasons, some companies may use other companies’ servers, increasing the risk of leaking user activity.

We discovered in the privacy policy that the company does keep some data about users. This is mainly the information provided during registration, i.e. name, email address, and payment information. It was somewhat surprising to find that the company requires a full name and states in the terms of use that the information provided must be true.

Nowhere on the VyprVPN website did we see a “Transparency Report” or “Warrant Canary”. Some VPN providers share these documents publicly with users. For example, they contain details of legal or government challenges to data release, along with information on how the company handled them.

The company may share users’ data with third parties in the event of business changes, such as when merging with another company or negotiating a merger.

  14. VyprVPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Customer support at VyprVPN has exceeded our expectations.

There is nonstop live chat available, and as we verified, it is indeed accessible around the clock. A staff member responded to the chat within minutes at various times of the day, including weekends. Additionally, after each closed chat, VyprVPN sends an email survey to maximize customer satisfaction. Technical support is available in English only.

Users can also access a contact form on the VyprVPN website and an email address: support@vyprvpn.com. The contact form can be accessed from the app without having to visit the website, and the advantage is the ability to attach a support log to help the support staff resolve the issue.

You can also make use of the comprehensive hints and tips database, where tutorials for installing and setting up the application, troubleshooting procedures, and FAQs are published. This section also includes a page with information about the status of the application, for example, notifications about the termination of an obsolete protocol or the release of a new version of the application.

  15. VyprVPN FAQ

    Is VyprVPN free?
VyprVPN is a paid service; there is no free option available. Subscriptions can be purchased either with monthly payments or for a full year with prepayment. The second option is more convenient, with the subscription price at $8.33 per month.

A trial version of VyprVPN is available for 3 days, with the condition that the app is installed via the Google Play Store or Apple Store. VyprVPN also offers a money-back guarantee within 30 days of payment.

    Is VyprVPN secure?
VyprVPN can be considered a secure VPN, both in terms of storing your data and encrypting your traffic.

To secure your data transmissions, VyprVPN uses 256-bit encryption. Reliable security protocols such as IKEv2, OpenVPN, Wireguard, and its own Chameleon protocol are available.

VyprVPN collects only the data about users that they provided during registration. It does not keep any logs of Internet usage activity. This has been confirmed in the past by an independent audit dating back to 2018. For leading VPN providers, regular audits are preferred.

The only thing that gave us pause about data security with VyprVPN was the need to enter a full name during registration.

    Is VyprVPN a good VPN?
Whether a VPN is good often depends on individual needs, as each user has different requirements for the service. In our testing, VyprVPN achieved an overall grade of 7.6/10.

Based on these results, VyprVPN is worth considering. The service offers apps for a large number of device types, decent transfer speeds, and the ability to unlock foreign streaming platforms. In addition, it uses advanced communication protocols, reliably hides our IP address, and we didn’t detect any WebRTC or DNS leaks while using it.

VyprVPN does fall behind the absolute top of the market in the number of servers it operates, and the higher subscription price is also a disadvantage. The 2018 security audit is already quite outdated, although it’s fair to say that some competing VPN providers have never passed it.
