BoxPN VPN 2024 Review: 8 Cons and 2 Pros

BoxPN VPN 2024 Review: 8 Cons and 2 Pros

4
★★
  1. BoxPN VPN Lacks Basic Functionality, Scored 4.0/10 in Test

    • Very low download (37 Mb/s) and upload (9 Mb/s)
    • Failed to unblock video from streaming platforms
    • The Android app is not available, although BoxPN VPN promotes it
    • Includes very few features
    • Some servers are run by an external provider
    • Most servers are virtual
    • Application is only available for basic platforms
    • VPN has not been independently audited
    • The company is headquartered outside of Western jurisdictions
    • Subscriptions can be paid with cryptocurrencies

The BoxPN VPN is operated by Seychelles-based Edelino Commerce Inc. which is also behind the Anonine VPN and FrootVPN services. In our test, BoxPN VPN scored a low 4.0/10, ranking it at an unflattering 90 in the 90 reviewed VPNs.

Weaker sites have quite a few BoxPN VPN considering the subscription price $3.57 per month. The app is only available for basic platforms and the feature offering is minimal.

Valuable points in the BoxPN VPN rating were lost due to the very low connection speed, in repeated tests we measured an average download of only 37 Mb/s and an upload of 9 Mb/s. The BoxPN VPN also failed to unblock the foreign libraries of streaming platforms Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Hulu. The only geoblock-protected video was able to be played on YouTube.

A complication for making foreign content available is that most BoxPN VPN servers are virtual only. In addition, some of them are operated by an external service provider, which may pose a security risk. The BoxPN VPN has not been independently audited.

The advantages of BoxPN VPN are the ability to pay for subscriptions with cryptocurrencies and the operator’s location outside of Western jurisdictions.

Overall, BoxPN VPN falls well short in terms of price to features offered. The best VPNs in the rankings such as NordVPN, Surfshark or CyberGhost VPN offer significantly more features at a comparable or better price.

With a single subscription, BoxPN VPN can be used on a maximum of 5 different devices simultaneously. Increasing the number of devices for a fee is not possible.

The BoxPN VPN app is only available for Windows, macOS and Linux computers and iOS mobile devices. While BoxPN VPN states on its website that it offers an Android app, the link to download it does not work. The app cannot be traced in the Google Play store either. We have asked customer support about the availability of the app, but they have not been able to answer this question.

The BoxPN VPN can also be run on a router using the instructions on the website, making it easy to protect all devices connected to one network. In terms of quota allowed, the router is considered as one device.

The BoxPN VPN browser extension does not offer this.

  4. BoxPN VPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +5 more🇩🇪 German 🇪🇸 Spanish 🇫🇷 French 🇷🇺 Russian 🇸🇪 Swedish
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

To access the application, a user account is required BoxPN VPN, which can be created via email and password. The option to log in via Facebook or Google account is not supported.

The app is only available in light mode, dark mode is not available. The graphical design of the application BoxPN VPN looks very outdated and the available features are minimal. The home screen of BoxPN VPN displays an overview of the VPN connection status as well as a list of available sites.

The BoxPN VPN does not support automatic connection to the fastest server at that moment. The connection location must always be manually selected from a list, which also shows a specific city for each country. Individual locations can be saved as favorites, and connected to faster in the future.

Connecting to the selected server took only a few seconds during testing, during which time you could terminate the connection and return to selecting the location. The application worked smoothly and without any stuttering, and we never once experienced a serious problem with use. The environment is available in 6 different languages, including English.

In the settings, it is possible to activate the automatic launch of the app when the device is switched on, as well as the automatic connection to the VPN server. The BoxPN VPN is one of a relatively narrow range of services that have not implemented a full-fledged kill switch. When switching between servers, it only warned us to shut down sensitive applications first. It can’t automatically disconnect from the internet when the connection to the server BoxPN VPN goes down.

The BoxPN VPN also lacks the whitelist feature, which allows selected applications to access the Internet directly, while all others will be protected via VPN.

  5. BoxPN VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

BoxPN VPN does not limit the user in the amount of data transferred, which is standard among paid services.

While the BoxPN VPN application itself started quickly, it took a few seconds to connect to the servers. There were quite significant differences between servers.

In repeated tests, we achieved an average download speed 37 Mb/s that would normally be insufficient even for 4k video playback. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary. Connection speeds for VPNs normally fluctuate over time and between servers, however, for example, we achieved an average download for FastestVPN.

The average upload speed achieved 9 Mb/s is insufficient for torrenting or sharing bulky files.

The response speed achieved by BoxPN VPN averaged 31 ms, which is sufficient for gaming or video chatting without annoying lags. The best VPNs achieve significantly better response times, For example, we measured AdGuard VPN achieving 7 ms and ExpressVPN achieving an average response of 12 ms.

Overall, the speed of BoxPN VPN is satisfactory for normal internet activity, but it is not suitable for regular video watching or transferring large amounts of data. For these purposes it is better to use, for example, NordVPN or Private Internet Access.

  6. BoxPN VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      200
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      32
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇺🇸 USA
    South America 🇧🇷 Brazil
    Asia 🇨🇳 China 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇷🇺 Russia 🇸🇬 Singapore
    Africa
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

BoxPN VPN uses over 200 servers in 32 countries around the world. Although the quality of the infrastructure is also determined by the configuration and average utilization, the number of 200 servers is below average in the context of other services.

Most servers are virtual only and not physically located in a given country. This can cause problems when bypassing the geo-block, as instead of a virtual location, the user will be given the country where the server is physically located as the relevant country. In addition, some servers are provided by third parties, so that the operator BoxPN VPN does not have full control over them. From the point of view of user privacy, this may be a security risk.

Most of the BoxPN VPN servers are located in Europe, with Asia also having a relatively large presence. Among less common countries, servers are allocated in Luxembourg, Costa Rica, Singapore or New Zealand. Some servers have BoxPN VPN located in Prague as well.

Of the countries with state censorship, BoxPN VPN has servers available in Russia, India and Turkey.

Each of the BoxPN VPN servers supports all the features offered in the application. The BoxPN VPN does not operate any servers specifically dedicated to a certain type of traffic, such as gaming or streaming. All servers simultaneously support P2P data sharing and allow torrenting.

  7. BoxPN VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      No
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

One of the few security features of BoxPN VPN is DNS leak protection, which worked well during service testing.

A major shortcoming of BoxPN VPN is the lack of a kill switch that would disconnect the device from the Internet when the connection to the VPN server fails. Among the paid VPNs commonly available, this feature prevents the possible discovery of the user’s real location or IP address. Instead of BoxPN VPN just reminding the user to turn off sensitive applications when switching between servers. However, it does not automatically disconnect the user from the Internet.

In the application settings, you can select the protocol to use from OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP. While the OpenVPN protocol can be described as a modern standard, the other two are already obsolete. The transmitted data is protected by up to 2048-bit encryption, which is very secure.

Advanced security features of private networks include multi-hop, where an application connects through two different VPN servers simultaneously. This increases the level of security when a second VPN server protects the user in case of a possible breach of the first layer of protection. However, BoxPN VPN does not offer multi-hop.

The BoxPN VPN does not support connecting servers via Tor, nor can the user account be protected by two-factor authentication, where a code sent, for example, to an email is required along with a password.

  8. BoxPN VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      No
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      No
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      No
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      No
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      No
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

BoxPN VPN is not a good network for unblocking streaming platforms.

In our test, BoxPN VPN was only able to unblock video from YouTube, and we were unable to access foreign Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Hulu. Some VPNs run special servers optimized for streaming video, BoxPN VPN has nothing like that.

Furthermore, the average download speed we achieved 37 Mb/s would not be sufficient for playing ultra-high resolution 4k video. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary.

To unblock streams, we recommend preferring NordVPN, Surfshark or CyberGhost VPN. These services have been able to unblock all streaming platforms, have stable speeds allowing 4k video playback and excellent levels of security.

  9. Features of BoxPN VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

BoxPN VPN has no extra features such as blocking ads, malware or trackers. The app can only establish the VPN connection itself.

Not even a camouflage mode is available, which can hide an active VPN connection from the ISP. This leads to an even higher level of privacy and allows you to connect securely from places where using a VPN is problematic.

A static IP address is also not available at an additional cost. The BoxPN VPN only provides a dynamic IP address, which changes each time you connect and disconnect from the server.

Nor does BoxPN VPN offer any other additional services or features.

  10. BoxPN VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

Like most of the VPN apps tested, BoxPN VPN did not overload the computer enough to limit the experience.

After shutting down, the application still runs in the background and only draws on RAM. To quit it completely, you need to click on the icon in the system tray.

  11. BoxPN VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

BoxPN VPN supports torrenting and P2P file sharing on all servers, while none of them are optimized for this type of traffic.

For many reasons, we do not consider BoxPN VPN to be a suitable service for torrenting. The application lacks the important security feature of a kill switch, which disconnects the device from the Internet if the connection to the VPN server fails. The missing kill switch may cause the user’s real IP address to be revealed to other torrenting users. The measured download speed 37 Mb/s and upload speed 9 Mb/s is insufficient for data sharing.

The best VPN for torrenting offers significantly better security, dedicated servers for P2P, and orders of magnitude faster transfer speeds. We can recommend CyberGhost VPN, NordVPN or Proton VPN Plus for these purposes.

  12. What is the country of origin of BoxPN VPN?

    • VPN Provider: Edelino Commerce Inc.
    • Country of origin: 🇸🇨 Seychelles

The operator of BoxPN VPN is Edelino Commerce Inc. located in Victoria, Seychelles. The same company also operates FrootVPN and Anonine VPN.

Being based in the Seychelles is good news from a user perspective. The island country is not subject to Western legal jurisdictions and is not a member of the 14 Eyes alliance, whose intelligence services monitor Internet traffic and share the intelligence they gather with each other.

  13. BoxPN VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Partially
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

BoxPN VPN states that it does not store any sensitive data about its users, such as IP addresses, websites visited, timestamps, or device identifiers. The only information collected is that needed to manage the user’s account, such as username, email address and password.

This data, along with payment information, is necessary to create an account and use the service.

From a privacy perspective, the fact that some of the servers used are not operated directly by Edelino Commerce Inc. but are operated by an external provider may be considered a security risk.

Unlike Surfshark, NordVPN and other services, BoxPN VPN has not undergone an independent audit to confirm the security of the service and the handling of user data. At the same time, there is no known case of BoxPN VPN selling user data, handing it over to the police or leaking it.

Users agree in their service contract not to use BoxPN VPN for illegal activities under threat of sanctions.

Even more trust in BoxPN VPN, along with auditing, would be helped by the introduction of multi-hop functionality and the use of RAM-only servers. The principle of multi-hop (also known as Double VPN) is to connect through two different VPN servers simultaneously, which increases the level of security. RAM servers, on the other hand, do not, in principle, allow long-term storage of data, as they are continuously overwritten.

  14. BoxPN VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Contacting support at BoxPN VPN can be done via live chat on the site or via a contact form, which will forward subsequent communication to email. Our experience with technical support cannot be described as positive. The average response time was around 4 days and some questions asked went unanswered.

The website BoxPN VPN also has a FAQ section with useful information about VPNs. In addition, you’ll find a guide to help you download and set up VPNs on different types of devices.

  15. BoxPN VPN FAQ

    Is BoxPN VPN secure?
The BoxPN VPN is not audited by an independent third party, however there are no records of user data being sold or other security issues to date. Unfortunately, the operation of some servers is outsourced to BoxPN VPN, so the company does not have full control over them. In addition, the application lacks a basic kill switch and some advanced features to provide better security.

For these reasons, we must conclude that BoxPN VPN provides only a basic level of protection that is sufficient for normal Internet use. For users requiring the best security, we recommend that you prefer NordVPN or Proton VPN Plus.

    Is BoxPN VPN free?
No. The BoxPN VPN is a paid service operated by Edelino Commerce Inc. registered in Seychelles. The subscription price starts at $3.57 per month, and a money-back guarantee of 7 days is available for each order.

Free trial version BoxPN VPN is not available.

Is BoxPN VPN a good VPN?
The BoxPN VPN is sufficient for normal internet surfing. Considering the price of the subscription $3.57 and the available features, we can’t call it a good VPN.

In our test, it failed to unblock most streaming platforms, achieved below-average transfer speeds, and lacked some features that can be described as quite basic. The BoxPN VPN received an overall score of only 4.0/10, which ranked it 90. among the 90 VPN services in the database.
