   The BoxPN VPN is operated by Seychelles-based Edelino Commerce Inc. which is also behind the Anonine VPN and FrootVPN services. In our test, BoxPN VPN scored a low 4.0/10, ranking it at an unflattering 90 in the 90 reviewed VPNs.

   Weaker sites have quite a few BoxPN VPN considering the subscription price $3.55 per month. The app is only available for basic platforms and the feature offering is minimal.

   Valuable points in the BoxPN VPN rating were lost due to the very low connection speed, in repeated tests we measured an average download of only 37 Mb/s and an upload of 9 Mb/s.    With a single subscription, BoxPN VPN can be used on a maximum of 5 different devices simultaneously. Increasing the number of devices for a fee is not possible.

   The BoxPN VPN app is only available for Windows, macOS and Linux computers and iOS mobile devices. While BoxPN VPN states on its website that it offers an Android app, the link to download it does not work. The app cannot be traced in the Google Play store either. We have asked customer support about the availability of the app, but they have not been able to answer this question.

   The BoxPN VPN can also be run on a router using the instructions on the website, making it easy to protect all devices connected to one network. In terms of quota allowed, the router is considered as one device.

   While the BoxPN VPN application itself started quickly, it took a few seconds to connect to the servers. There were quite significant differences between servers.

   In repeated tests, we achieved an average download speed 37 Mb/s that would normally be insufficient even for 4k video playback. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary. Connection speeds for VPNs normally fluctuate over time and between servers, however, for example, we achieved an average download for FastestVPN.

   The average upload speed achieved 9 Mb/s is insufficient for torrenting or sharing bulky files.

   The response speed achieved by BoxPN VPN averaged 31 ms, which is sufficient for gaming or video chatting without annoying lags. The best VPNs achieve significantly better response times, For example, we measured AdGuard VPN achieving 7 ms and ExpressVPN achieving an average response of 12 ms.

   Overall, the speed of BoxPN VPN is satisfactory for normal internet activity, but it is not suitable for regular video watching or transferring large amounts of data. For these purposes it is better to use, for example, NordVPN or Private Internet Access.

   BoxPN VPN uses over 200 servers in 32 countries around the world. Although the quality of the infrastructure is also determined by the configuration and average utilization, the number of 200 servers is below average in the context of other services.

   Most servers are virtual only and not physically located in a given country. This can cause problems when bypassing the geo-block, as instead of a virtual location, the user will be given the country where the server is physically located as the relevant country. In addition, some servers are provided by third parties, so that the operator BoxPN VPN does not have full control over them. From the point of view of user privacy, this may be a security risk.

   A major shortcoming of BoxPN VPN is the lack of a kill switch that would disconnect the device from the Internet when the connection to the VPN server fails. Among the paid VPNs commonly available, this feature prevents the possible discovery of the user’s real location or IP address. Instead of BoxPN VPN just reminding the user to turn off sensitive applications when switching between servers. However, it does not automatically disconnect the user from the Internet.

   In the application settings, you can select the protocol to use from OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP. While the OpenVPN protocol can be described as a modern standard, the other two are already obsolete. The transmitted data is protected by up to 2048-bit encryption, which is very secure.

   Advanced security features of private networks include multi-hop, where an application connects through two different VPN servers simultaneously. This increases the level of security when a second VPN server protects the user in case of a possible breach of the first layer of protection. However, BoxPN VPN does not offer multi-hop.

   The BoxPN VPN does not support connecting servers via Tor, nor can the user account be protected by two-factor authentication, where a code sent, for example, to an email is required along with a password.

   In our test, BoxPN VPN was only able to unblock video from YouTube, and we were unable to access foreign Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Hulu. Some VPNs run special servers optimized for streaming video, BoxPN VPN has nothing like that.

   Furthermore, the average download speed we achieved 37 Mb/s would not be sufficient for playing ultra-high resolution 4k video. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary.

    Like most of the VPN apps tested, BoxPN VPN did not overload the computer enough to limit the experience.

    After shutting down, the application still runs in the background and only draws on RAM. To quit it completely, you need to click on the icon in the system tray.

The missing kill switch may cause the user’s real IP address to be revealed to other torrenting users. The measured download speed 37 Mb/s and upload speed 9 Mb/s is insufficient for data sharing.
