VPN.asia 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 2 Pros

VPN.asia 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 2 Pros

6
★★★
  1. VPN.asia Disappointed Users With Low Speed and Connection Establishment Problems

    • Unable to establish a connection to the server in some cases
    • Connection was very slow for some servers
    • Limited functions in the application
    • Only Netflix and HBO Max streaming platforms were unblocked
    • Supports connection to the Tor network
    • Simple and clear user interface

VPN.asia is a basic private network, backed by the Hong Kong company SpiderSilk Limited. The VPN lacks common features such as DNS protection or ad blocking. On the other hand, it has a clear interface and a setup that’s simple enough even for inexperienced users.

Multiple subscriptions can be managed under one VPN.asia account. Separate login credentials can be created for each user, so there’s no need to share full account access with them.

The weakest point during testing of VPN.asia was its very low connection stability. Repeatedly, we were unable to establish a connection to the server via one of the protocols (most often Stealth). Consequently, we had to choose a different connection location.

When the connection was successful, we encountered significantly below-average connection speeds in some cases. However, with the right combination of chosen protocol and server, we achieved satisfactory download (67 Mb/s) and upload (13 Mb/s) speeds.

During testing, we were able to unblock Netflix, HBO Max, and YouTube streaming services with VPN.asia. Video from Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and Hulu failed to play.

Getting VPN.asia up and running is quick and easy. Support is available around the clock and answered our questions quickly and helpfully. VPN.asia does not store logs and supports torrenting.

If the highest level of privacy is a priority for you, we recommend opting for a competing solution due to the lack of security features. For example, Surfshark might be an ideal alternative with its official auditing and a large number of security features.

VPN.asia allows you to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously under one license. The license is limited to one person or one household. According to the terms of the contract, it cannot be shared among multiple people.

The native VPN.asia application can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux computers. The mobile app is available for both Android and Apple devices.

For TVs and multimedia systems, VPN.asia directly supports Fire TV and Android TV; the app is not available for Apple TV. Direct support is also lacking for PlayStation and Xbox game consoles.

Unfortunately, other platforms do not have their own app. On the VPN.asia website, you can download the OpenVPN format, which allows you to deploy VPNs on your router, smart NAS storage, and Raspberry Pi. OpenVPN is also available in a text-based interface and can thus be used on most devices. Before purchasing a license, ensure that your desired device supports this format.

The VPN.asia extension is not available for any browser.

  4. VPN.asia App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +11 more🇪🇸 Spanish 🇫🇷 French 🇨🇳 Chinese 🇷🇺 Russian 🇯🇵 Japanese 🇳🇱 Dutch 🇮🇩 Indonesian 🇹🇭 Thai 🇻🇳 Vietnamese 🇲🇾 Malay tl;
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

Using this VPN works on the principle of sub-accounts. On the VPN.asia website, you create your own username and password for each subscription under your main account, which you use to log in to the subscription in the app.

In the settings, you define the basic behavior of the application. You can activate reconnection after an outage, automatically turn on and connect when you start your device, or display notifications. On the technical side, you can set a kill switch (only for the OpenVPN protocol), choose the protocol used, or use an IPv6 address. The application stores logs locally, which can be viewed with the push of a button.

The appearance of the application uses a white-green palette; unfortunately, dark mode is not available. Overall, the navigation of the application is very simple, with buttons and settings intuitively placed. Even less experienced users will have no problem with the controls.

You can choose from 12 languages.

  5. VPN.asia Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

VPN.asia does not limit users in any way regarding the amount of data transferred; this is standard with paid VPNs.

Speed tests were conducted over several days and at different times on a gigabit interface. The speeds without using the VPN connection were 945 Mbps for download and 735 Mbps for upload. When measured using the UDP OpenVPN protocol, the download speed was satisfactory.

The VPN connection via a remote server 8,000 km away slowed the download to 130 Mbps and the upload to 60 Mbps. A speed degradation of approximately 77% may appear suboptimal. However, at this distance, VPN.asia performed very satisfactorily, with measured speeds sufficient for streaming 4K video, for which a download speed of at least 50 Mbps is generally recommended.

On a remote server 1,300 km away, the download speed climbed to 200 Mbps and the upload speed to 589 Mbps. Thus, VPN.asia seems to be a very good choice in terms of speed alone.

On the other hand, the server in Prague, for example, is limited to only 100 Mbps. When using the UDP OpenVPN protocol, the connection was unstable, and in certain cases, the connection was not even established. Ironically, all the speed testing was done from Prague.

When using the Stealth protocol, the connection was established within seconds, and when selecting specific servers, there were no problems with establishing a connection. The disadvantage was very low transfer speeds; on a server 500 km away, we measured download at only 21.93 Mbps and upload at 12.28 Mbps.

  6. VPN.asia Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      51
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      33
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇫🇮 Finland 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇵🇱 Poland 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine

    Asia 🇵🇭 Philippines 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇩 Indonesia 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇷🇺 Russia 🇸🇬 Singapore 🇹🇭 Thailand
    Africa 🇿🇦 South Africa
    Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia

VPN.asia operates servers in 33 countries around the world. Most of them are in Europe, but as the name of the VPN suggests, Asia is well represented.

The US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and South Africa are also on the list of VPN.asia servers. Among the less common countries, Slovenia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand are represented. Servers are also available in countries with government censorship, namely Russia and Turkey.

Servers vary in maximum available speed, which is affected by distance or by dynamic speed reduction based on the number of connected users. In terms of available features, all servers are identical.

There are several servers per location, which also use load-balancing to lend each other computing power based on current demand. The number of servers at VPN.asia cannot be specified, and the number of servers changes dynamically based on the current load. The smallest number of servers is 51.

In general, a single physical server can run dozens of separate virtual servers.

  7. VPN.asia Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      No
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      Yes
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

VPN services tend to crash and leak DNS records, risking exposure of user data. In our tests, we did not encounter a DNS leak with VPN.asia.

A kill switch is a feature that immediately disconnects the device from the Internet in the event of a VPN connection failure. This prevents data from being sent without VPN protection, which could result in the user’s location or IP address being revealed. The VPN.asia kill switch has only been implemented for OpenVPN protocols.

Not available with VPN.asia is the multi-hop feature, where the VPN connection is routed through multiple servers simultaneously. The advantage of a multi-hop connection is a higher level of anonymity; the trade-off for this is usually a lower transfer rate.

With VPN.asia, you have a choice of WireGuard, OpenVPN TCP, OpenVPN UDP, and Stealth protocols. The Stealth protocol is developed by VPN.asia, uses TLS/SSL encryption, and is a good solution if you have a strict firewall setup.

WireGuard uses ChaCha20 encryption, OpenVPN secures data via AES-256. Both encryption methods are considered among the best currently available.

VPN.asia can be used to browse the Internet via Tor.

  8. VPN.asia & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      No
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      No
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      No
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

In a test of unblocking streaming platforms, VPN.asia achieved mixed results.

We were able to unblock videos from foreign Netflix, YouTube, and HBO Max. Despite repeated attempts, we were unable to play videos from Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Hulu. During our tests, we again encountered connection issues with some servers. Some sites were completely unavailable.

Additionally, streaming platforms are constantly fighting against connections from virtual locations, so the ability of a platform to unblock may change over time. In general, it can help to disconnect and reconnect from the VPN when problems arise. This will change the IP address to a different one that may not be on the block list.

With the faster OpenVPN UDP and WireGuard protocols, 4K video playback was not an issue due to the speeds achieved. When using the more discrete Stealth protocol, the speed was slower, so 4K video playback was not possible.

Thus, VPN.asia is not the best choice for use with streaming video. We recommend preferring, for example, services like NordVPN or CyberGhost VPN, which unblocked all platforms in tests, have very high speeds, and excellent security levels.

  9. Features of VPN.asia: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

VPN.asia does not have built-in ad-blocking, malware, or tracker blocking.

Static IP addresses are not available with VPN.asia, even at an additional cost. You can activate an IPv6 address in your user account settings. A dedicated server can be set up through technical support for an additional fee. It will only be available to you and the users you grant access to.

No other additional services are offered by VPN.asia.

  10. VPN.asia‘s CPU usage and App Performance

RAM utilization with the native desktop application for VPN.asia was steady around 38 MB, with our regular processor, the utilization was almost zero. The only change we noticed was when connecting to the server, when the CPU load momentarily spiked to 4.4%. During normal use, it stayed at 0-0.8%.

The impact of the VPN.asia application on the performance of the computer was essentially zero, so usage will not be an issue for most devices.

The application occupies approximately 160 MB on disk, a slight increase can be expected after some time of use due to local log storage.

  11. VPN.asia Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

VPN.asia supports torrenting and P2P connections on all servers.

Servers specifically optimized for P2P are not available at VPN.asia, nor is a static IP address.

The average measured download speed of 67 Mb/s and upload speed of 13 Mb/s is sufficient for P2P file sharing. However, we consider the lack of a kill switch for all available protocols to be a major shortcoming.

The best VPN for torrenting offers better security features and faster speeds on all servers. If P2P is your main reason for getting a VPN, we recommend reading the reviews of Surfshark and ExpressVPN first.

  12. What is the country of origin of VPN.asia?

    • VPN Provider: SpiderSilk Limited
    • Country of origin: 🇭🇰 Hong Kong

The operator of VPN.asia is SpiderSilk Limited, based in Hong Kong. Founded in March 2020, the company provides other internet privacy services in addition to operating VPNs.

VPN.asia states on its website that it is operated from a virtual location and has no physical headquarters. However, it uses the operator’s headquarters in the aforementioned Hong Kong as its contact address.

In Hong Kong, government agencies have the right by law to collect data from companies without any notice or warrant. Therefore, users of VPN.asia are subject to local laws, and their data can be released if a warrant is issued.

  13. VPN.asia and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

VPN.asia states that it does not store any logs related to VPN usage.

If the authorized authorities in Hong Kong were to demand the release of data, the operator of VPN.asia would have no choice. However, since it does not store any data, it cannot release anything.

Third-party gateways are used for subscription payments, so users’ payment data is not stored directly with VPN.asia. Data related to settings, servers used, etc., is collected locally within the application itself. The data is stored locally on the user’s device and can be deleted at any time.

VPN.asia has not yet undergone any independent third-party audit. The operator states that data passing through the VPN servers is stored only in RAM. This does not, by its nature, allow long-term data collection, and nothing is stored on VPN.asia‘s hard drives.

VPN.asia would benefit even more from regular audits of the application and servers by a reputable company.

  14. VPN.asia Support: Chat, e-mail…

There is a support section on the VPN.asia website that describes the most common problems with using the service and their solutions. If you do not find an answer to your question, you can create a new ticket or contact the support staff via chat.

The live chat does not have set hours of operation, but in our support testing, we did not have to wait long for a response.

  15. VPN.asia FAQ

    Is VPN.asia secure?
According to its claim, VPN.asia does not store usage logs, which is a basic rule for a secure VPN. The transmitted data is secured with AES-256 encryption, one of the most secure methods ever. In addition, VPN.asia servers exclusively use RAM memory, which does not allow for long-term data storage. All of this helps to make the service more secure.

On the other hand, VPN.asia lacks the kill switch feature for all protocols offered, and the service has not been independently audited to confirm its security.

Overall, we consider VPN.asia to be relatively secure.

    Is VPN.asia free?
VPN.asia is a paid service that can be subscribed to with monthly billing or prepaid for one or two years. The price of the most affordable subscription option is $2.49 per month. A free version of VPN.asia is not available.
    Is VPN.asia a Chinese company?
The operator of VPN.asia is SpiderSilk Ltd., registered in Hong Kong. The service’s website states that VPN.asia has a virtual headquarters, and the operator uses mailboxes in Hong Kong for tax purposes only.
