FrootVPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 2 Pros

FrootVPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 2 Pros

6.8
★★★
  1. FrootVPN: Is It Worth The $3.57 Per Month?

    • VPN has not been independently audited
    • Native app is only available for Windows
    • Complex to get VPN to work on iOS, Android, macOS and other platforms
    • Low number of servers (only 150)
    • It does not store data about its users
    • Subscriptions can be paid with cryptocurrencies

The FrootVPN is a paid service operated by Edelino Commerce Inc. based in the Seychelles. The same company also operates Anonine VPN and BoxPN VPN. In our test, FrootVPN earned an overall score of 6.8/10, which currently ranks it 55. reviewed VPNs.

The main drawback of FrootVPN is that it is quite difficult to install on platforms other than Windows. In fact, the actual application is only available for this desktop operating system. Users with other operating systems must download a third-party application and add the FrootVPN configuration to it. This can be an advantage for advanced users who want to configure things their own way, others are more likely to be put off.

The FrootVPN also lost points in the overall rating due to the below average number of servers involved. Although the number isn’t the only parameter telling about their quality, 150 is very low in the context of the other VPNs reviewed. Both download speed (89 Mb/s) and upload speed (42 Mb/s) are sufficient for most users.

The advantage of FrootVPN is a relatively good level of anonymity. No logs are generated during the use of the application and subscriptions can be paid with cryptocurrencies. The VPN provider regularly publishes a Warrant Canary on the site, through which it reports cases where it has been forced to hand over users’ personal data to the police. It would help trust even more if FrootVPN was independently audited.

Mixed results for FrootVPN in a test of unblocking foreign streaming platform libraries. It handled YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, but failed to unblock Disney Plus, HBO Max and Hulu.

  2. FrootVPN Subscription: Discount Code, Free Trial, Money Back Guarantee…

    • Your Price: $10.7267% off  $3.57 /mo (5 devices)
    • Money Back Guarantee: Yes (30 days)
    • Free Trial: No
    • Cryptocurrency payments:
      Yes
      Bitcoin :Yes
      Dash :Yes
      Ethereum :Yes
      Ripple :No

The FrootVPN subscription is available in three variants, differing only in length and price. They are equal in terms of features and parameters offered. The least favorable is the pay-as-you-go monthly subscription for $10.72. More advantageous is the three-month and one-year prepaid subscriptions, which cost $3.57 on a per-month basis.

You can use a debit or credit card, PayPal or, for the highest level of anonymity, the cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Monero or Litecoin to pay for your subscription. If you recommend FrootVPN to your friends and they arrange a subscription, you and they get an extra month for free.

All subscription options come with a money-back guarantee of 30 days. Trial version FrootVPN does not exist. To try the service, you must first subscribe and then take advantage of the money-back guarantee.

The FrootVPN can be run with one account on a maximum of 5 different devices simultaneously. For most users, this number will probably be sufficient, however, perhaps Surfshark can be connected from 999 devices at the same time.

The FrootVPN application is only directly available for Windows computers. On other platforms, VPNs can be used with the OpenVPN protocol, but this requires manual setup. Instructions are available in the FAQ section of the FrootVPN website.

You can use this procedure to get FrootVPN up and running on macOS and Linux computers, Android and iOS mobile devices, NAS storage, or select types of routers. The tutorials are step-by-step, and with their help, even an intermediate user should be able to configure FrootVPN. Still, compared to other VPNs, this procedure is complicated because it is not enough to just install and run the app.

On game consoles, televisions, and media centers, FrootVPN cannot be used directly. VPN does not offer an add-on to any of the web browsers either.

  4. FrootVPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +3 more🇩🇪 German 🇪🇸 Spanish 🇫🇷 French
    • Whitelisting:
      Yes
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

FrootVPN directly offers a Windows-only application. Its graphical design is simple, which makes it quite clear. In the application settings, you can choose the protocol you use, save servers to your favorites, or quickly connect to the last used site.

The app also supports the option to automatically start after the device boots or to restore the VPN connection in case of an unexpected crash. A rather additional feature is the ability to set up automatic sending of error logs to technical support. The environment is available in 4 different languages, including English.

The kill switch feature offers a kind of hybrid whitelist, where you can independently choose applications that will continue to work after the VPN crashes.

For other operating systems, the behavior of the application depends on which solution you choose.

The OpenVPN app for mobile devices doesn’t offer much functionality. Basically, it only allows you to connect to the server, change the color theme of the app and the kill switch.

The Mac app has implemented a kill switch, automatic connection when the app starts, and some other settings that advanced users will especially benefit from. The advantage of the app is the fact that it is available in a variety of languages.

  5. FrootVPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

FrootVPN does not limit the user in the amount of data transferred, which is commonplace among paid services.

Establishing connections to servers was fast during testing, but we did notice some differences depending on the protocol chosen. We tested FrootVPN on different servers, the presented results are averages of measurements.

The download speed reached 89 Mb/s, which would be sufficient for playing 4k resolution videos. For this, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary. The top rated services achieved orders of magnitude faster speeds, for example Proton VPN Plus we measured an average download of 334 Mb/s.

In the measured upload value, the loss of FrootVPN to the best VPN was even greater, 42 Mb/s can already slow users down when backing up bulky files or torrenting. For example, the aforementioned Proton VPN Plus achieved an average upload of 92 Mb/s.

The response speed of FrootVPN 101 ms is at the threshold where annoying lags may already occur during video calls, video loading or gaming. The best VPNs like AdGuard VPN only have response times around 7 ms. For response speed as opposed to transfer speed, a lower value is always better.

  6. FrootVPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      150
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      31
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇺🇸 USA
    South America 🇧🇷 Brazil
    Asia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇸🇬 Singapore
    Africa
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

The range of 150 servers in 31 countries is not very impressive compared to the competition.

Although the number of servers is only one indicator of the quality of the infrastructure, other services have orders of magnitude more, alongside their configuration and current load. Generally speaking, a higher number of servers reduces the risk of congestion when more users are connected at the same time. For example, Surfshark operates 3,200 servers in 97 countries.

Traditionally, most servers are allocated in Europe, FrootVPN also has a fairly good representation in Asia. Of the less traditional countries, servers are available in Luxembourg, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Singapore and New Zealand. The FrootVPN also has servers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Of the countries with government censorship, servers are available in Turkey and India. An overview of all sites, including their current load and response rates, is available on the FrootVPN website.

According to the available information, all FrootVPN servers are physically located in the presented countries, none of them are virtual.

The FrootVPN does not offer any servers specifically optimized for torrenting, and P2P file sharing is blocked in some locations. There are several servers labeled with the name of the streaming platform that are designed for video playback.

Servers can be saved to favorites in the app, and you can also use the quick connect feature to the last site you used.

  7. FrootVPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

FrootVPN has DNS leak protection, which is considered a basic security feature. When testing the VPN, our IP address remained hidden and there was no WebRTC or DNS leak.

Among other security features, only kill switch is available for FrootVPN, which did not work very reliably. Properly, it should disconnect the device from the internet in case the VPN protection is broken. However, in some cases, it failed to respond in time.

The FrootVPN application uses OpenVPN as its base protocol. Since most platforms use an external app, you can install other protocols on your device, some of which are now obsolete. PPTP, L2TP, or IKEv1 are supported. FrootVPN can also be used with the modern WireGuard protocol, however, this option is not well advertised anywhere.

The transmitted data is protected by 256-bit AES encryption. This is somewhere presented as “military-grade encryption”, as it is used by some armies and banks.

Connecting to the Tor network is not supported for FrootVPN. Advanced multi-hop connectivity, where the application connects through two different VPN servers simultaneously, is also not available. Finally, two-factor authentication when logging into a user account is also missing.

  8. FrootVPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      No
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      No
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      No
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

In a test of unblocking foreign streaming platform libraries, FrootVPN achieved mixed results. It successfully unblocked video from YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. It couldn’t handle streaming from Disney Plus, HBO Max and Hulu.

To access US content, all you had to do was select the appropriate location and platform name from the list of servers. The FrootVPN offers several servers specifically optimized for this purpose.

Amazon Prime showed us a warning about an active VPN, after which it wouldn’t let us play the content. For Disney Plus and Hulu, we were unable to connect at all. On other platforms, we had no problem with video playback, and the measured download speed 89 Mb/s also allowed us to watch 4K series and movies.

For better support of unblocking foreign content on all platforms, we recommend prioritizing NordVPN or CyberGhost VPN. Both VPNs unblocked all platforms tested, provide excellent levels of security, and consistently deliver high transfer speeds.

  9. Features of FrootVPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

FrootVPN doesn’t offer any extra features.

The app can’t block advertising, malware or trackers. Nor does FrootVPN support camouflage mode, which can hide activated VPN protection from ISPs or streaming platforms. Also unavailable is Dark Web Monitoring, which monitors whether a user’s personal information or credit card numbers have been leaked to the Internet.

Neither static nor dedicated IP addresses are available for FrootVPN, even at an additional cost.

For the top-rated VPNs, the range of premium features is better. For example, NordVPN offers the aforementioned data leak monitoring or password manager, while another subscription includes Surfshark Antivirus.

  10. FrootVPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

The device requirements for FrootVPN vary depending on the client and device you choose to use the VPN on. However, none of the available applications have excessive device requirements. Thus, using FrootVPN should not restrict the user from normal activities on a computer or phone.

If you have an older device and don’t use a VPN, you can disable FrootVPN completely, as the app still runs in the background even when inactive. You can exit the application completely via the icon in the system tray.

  11. FrootVPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

FrootVPN only supports torrenting to a subset of servers, which ones they are can be found in the list in the user profile. No servers dedicated exclusively for torrenting are available.

The achieved download (89 Mb/s) and upload (42 Mb/s) speeds were rather average during our measurements. Similarly, the security level of FrootVPN is sufficient for normal operations, but we recommend to prefer a competing solution to ensure the maximum level of privacy.

We consider CyberGhost VPN, Ivacy VPN or NordVPN to be good VPNs for legal torrenting.

The FrootVPN explicitly warns that VPNs should not be used for breaking the law, especially copyright infringement. Interestingly, shortly after its creation, FrootVPN was recommended as a VPN suitable for P2P file sharing on one of the most famous torrent sites, The Pirate Bay. This was praise for the service, however, it was most likely a paid collaboration.

  12. What is the country of origin of FrootVPN?

    • VPN Provider: Edelino Commerce Inc.
    • Country of origin: 🇸🇨 Seychelles

FrootVPN is operated by Edelino Commerce Inc. based in Victoria, Seychelles. Its core business is the operation of virtual private networks, and its other products include BoxPN VPN and Anonine VPN.

Seychelles is quite user-friendly from the point of view, as the island country has a fairly favourable legislation. VPN providers do not have to collect or store data about users or network traffic.

The operator FrootVPN was previously based in Sweden, where the service was established in 2014.

  13. FrootVPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

FrootVPN states that no logs are generated from the use of the application.

The privacy policy details that only the username, email address, password, and volume of data transferred are collected. Thus, no data is stored about the websites visited, login times, IP addresses or device identifiers.

The operator FrootVPN further states that the servers are configured not to store any user data and that it ignores all requests for data from authorities other than the Seychelles authorities.

Unfortunately, FrootVPN‘s claim of a zero log storage policy is not substantiated by an independent audit, which would further add to the confidence in the service. On the other hand, there is not a single known case of users’ personal data being leaked, sold or released to the court.

In addition, FrootVPN issues an ongoing Warrant Canary, through which it covertly informs users when it receives requests to release user data. Although by law it must remain silent about all received challenges, so it approaches this in the opposite way. It simply informs the user that it has not received any challenges. If the message disappears from the FrootVPN site, it is apparent that users should beware.

  14. FrootVPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

The service advertises its round-the-clock support, but unfortunately we didn’t see this customer-appealing option. The FrootVPN site does display a live chat icon, but whenever we tried it, a message appeared stating that support was unavailable. After sending the message, we were notified that support staff would contact us via email. The average wait time for a response was three business days.

Support is in English, and can also be contacted directly at support@frootvpn.com, alternatively a ticket can be raised via the aforementioned chat and wait for resolution. It was a bit confusing for us that the replies to the query sent via chat and via email came from different addresses.

On the FrootVPN website, users can also find a section with frequently asked questions and their answers. However, the database is quite outdated and some of the information is no longer current. However, the installation guides for FrootVPN on each device type were good and reliable.

  15. FrootVPN FAQ

    Is FrootVPN free?
The FrootVPN is a paid service that is available in monthly, three-monthly and annual subscriptions. The price of the most affordable option on a per-month basis is $3.57. A money-back guarantee of 30 days is available for each order.

Trial version FrootVPN is not available. For a free trial, you must first order a subscription and then request a refund in time. However, according to various discussions, the operator FrootVPN often does not respond to refund requests.

    Is FrootVPN trusted?
Although FrootVPN has been on the market since 2014, it has failed to rank among the largest and most popular VPN providers. However, it does not generate logs when using the app, publishes Warrant Canary on its website, and there have been no leaks of user data so far.

To further enhance its credibility, it would benefit from an independent audit, which can prove, for example, NordVPN.

    Is FrootVPN good?
The FrootVPN received a rating of 6.8/10 in our evaluation.

The downside for most users of FrootVPN may be that the native application is only available for Windows. Protection for all other platforms must be handled through third-party clients, which may deter inexperienced users. In addition, FrootVPN has a relatively small network of servers, for example Private Internet Access runs 35,400.

A positive with FrootVPN is the ability to pay subscriptions with cryptocurrencies, which increases user anonymity.

For a comparable or lower price, you can subscribe to higher quality VPNs that offer more features and are independently audited. For example, NordVPN has achieved a $4.07/10 rating at the 9.4 price, Surfshark earned a monthly rating of $2.14/10 for 9.2/10.
