Anonine VPN 2024 Review: 3 Cons and 5 Pros

Anonine VPN 2024 Review: 3 Cons and 5 Pros

5.8
★★☆
  1. Anonine VPN Can Mask VPN as Regular HTTPS Traffic

    • Only 5 simultaneously connectable devices
    • Average download (42 Mb/s) and upload (8 Mb/s)
    • Small menu of countries (30) and servers (150)
    • Works on many types of devices
    • Unblocked all streaming services
    • Very good privacy conditions
    • Thanks to the Stunnel protocol, VPN can masquerade as HTTPS
    • Functions in China

The Anonine VPN was created in 2009 in Sweden, and has provided users with privacy from the start while moving around the internet. The current operator is Seychelles-based Edelino Commerce Inc., which is also behind BoxPN VPN and FrootVPN. [In our test, Anonine VPN earned a 5.8/10, ranking 77 in the reviewed VPNs.

The downside of Anonine VPN is the very low supply of mere 150 servers in 30 different countries compared to other VPNs. For comparison, NordVPN operates 5,813 servers in 59 countries.

It lost points in the overall Anonine VPN ranking mainly due to low transfer speeds. In repeated tests, we measured average download only for 42 Mb/s and upload only for 8 Mb/s. The response time 119 ms lags far behind competing services and can cause annoying stuttering during video calls or gaming.

The number of 5 simultaneously connected devices is also only average compared to other VPNs.

In the other areas tested, Anonine VPN performed quite well. We were surprised by the excellent level of compatibility, the VPN can be used on most types of devices. An advantage is the availability of the Stunnel protocol, which masks VPN traffic as regular HTTPS and has allowed us to effectively unblock streaming services. Another resulting advantage is the ability to use Anonine VPN in China.

The Anonine VPN has one of the best privacy policies, the use of the service is not logged, and Warrant Canary is published regularly. From it, one can effectively find out whether the company was obliged to hand over users’ data to the police or the courts.

The least favorable is the ongoing billed monthly subscription with a price of $7.45. Conversely, the most advantageous is the annual subscription Anonine VPN, with only $4.25 charged per month. All variants have automatic subscription renewal set.

The subscription ordering process itself is easy, just choose your preferred plan and create a user account. An email address and password are required. With a single subscription, Anonine VPN can be used on up to 5 devices simultaneously, no more can be added.

The level of Anonine VPN compatibility is better than many other VPNs we’ve reviewed. The app can be used on Windows, macOS and Linux computers as well as Android and iOS mobile devices.

The Anonine VPN supports Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, Kodi and Roku smart TVs, Playstation and Xbox gaming consoles, as well as on smart NAS storage.

The advantage of Anonine VPN is the ability to run a VPN on the router, effectively securing all devices connected to the same network. In terms of the quota allowed, the router is still considered a single device. Instructions for setting up the router are available in the support center on the Anonine VPN website.

The Anonine VPN browser extension is available for Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi and Brave.

  4. Anonine VPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

Apps Anonine VPN for all platforms are available on the website. Installation is simple and takes a few seconds, less experienced users can handle it without difficulty.

The application’s environment looks clear, the individual controls are arranged intuitively. We had a slightly better impression of the mobile version, which is even clearer compared to the desktop version. The weakest point of the app is the limited configuration options, which may be due to the small range of functions.

After launching the app, the window with the button for quick connection to the server is always the first one to appear. In the upper left corner there is an icon under which the remaining controls are hidden. The light mode of the application is the only one available, the dark version is not yet available. The Anonine VPN is only available in English.

To connect to a server, simply click on the icon, Anonine VPN itself will select the fastest server at that moment. Alternatively, the connection location can be selected from a list that is sorted alphabetically by country. The list can be filtered and arbitrary servers can be added to favorites.

After a successful connection to a server, the colour of the icon does not change, only the “Disconnect” button appears. The Auto-connect option can also be activated, which automatically connects the device to the VPN whenever it is switched on.

We consider the lack of Anonine VPN to be a shortcoming of whitelist, which would allow you to select apps or websites that will connect directly to the Internet even when VPN protection is activated.

  5. Anonine VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

There is no limit to the amount of data transferred, this is standard among paid VPNs.

The connection speed of Anonine VPN can be described as average, and there was no improvement, even when the application itself selected the server for us. For Anonine VPN we repeatedly tested the download, upload and server response speed. The measured values are very below average in the context of other VPNs. The cause can be found in the sheer number of 150 servers available.

Our measured download 42 Mb/s would not be sufficient for 4k video playback in normal use, for which a speed of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary.

Even the upload speed we achieved 8 Mb/s was insufficient for sharing bulky files or torrenting. For example, for FastestVPN we measured the average upload speed of 254 Mb/s.

The third significant parameter is the server response speed, we measured Anonine VPN on average 119 ms. For response as opposed to transfer rates, lower is better. A response time of up to 100 ms is quoted as necessary for gaming, and under 150 ms for video calls. The response speeds are even lower for the best VPNs, for example NordVPN we measured 11 ms, Surfshark had on average 10 ms.

  6. Anonine VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      150
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      30
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇺🇸 USA
    South America
    Asia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇸🇬 Singapore
    Africa
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

The Anonine VPN operates 150 servers in 30 countries around the world, well below average in the context of all VPNs tested. For example, ExpressVPN has servers in 94 locations.

Most of the servers are Anonine VPN allocated in Europe, with India, Luxembourg, Costa Rica and Singapore among the less common countries. The US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand are also among the available countries. Of the countries with prevalent government censorship, Anonine VPN has servers in Hong Kong, Singapore and Turkey.

There are no Anonine VPN servers specifically optimised for torrenting or gaming, for example. Some services segregate servers designed for certain types of traffic to ensure better quality parameters. All features of Anonine VPN are available on all servers.

  7. Anonine VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Anonine VPN provides DNS protection on all servers, no leaks occurred during our testing.

Kill switch is only available in Anonine VPN for Windows. The feature prevents the user’s real IP address or location from being revealed by disconnecting the device from the Internet in the event of a connection failure with the VPN server. The kill switch can be optionally disabled in the application settings.

The Anonine VPN application gives the user a choice of WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, IKEv2, IPSec and Stunnel protocols. The modern WireGuard protocol must first be configured using the manual available on the web Anonine VPN. Other protocols can be used without prior setup. The advantage of the Stunnel protocol is its ability to disguise the VPN connection as unrecognizable HTTPS.

The transmitted data is secured with 256-bit AES encryption, which is combined with a 2048-bit SSL key. This level of encryption is considered secure, and is used to protect banking or military systems, among others.

The Anonine VPN does not support multi-hop, where the connection is routed through two different VPN servers simultaneously. This achieves an even higher level of security, the downside can be lower connection speeds.

The anonymization of Internet movement over the Tor network is not supported by Anonine VPN.

  8. Anonine VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

In a test of unblocking foreign content streaming platforms, Anonine VPN had mixed results.

We were able to unblock the US libraries of YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max and Hulu, among others, credit for the Stunnel protocol, which masks the VPN as a regular HTTPS connection.

Streaming platform operators are trying to block VPN services and blacklist their IP addresses. If you have problems loading a video, you can try disconnecting from the VPN and reconnecting the next time. This will change the IP address to a different one that may not be registered on the blacklist.

However, the average download speed achieved (42 Mb/s) was so low that playback was complicated by frequent stutters when the video was loading. While the loading did stabilize slightly after connecting to a closer server, the VPN cannot be used for targeted unblocking of foreign content at that point. Therefore, we cannot recommend Anonine VPN for the purpose of unblocking streaming video.

Better results in our test were achieved by NordVPN (rating 9.4/10, price from $4.04 per month), Surfshark (rating 9.2/10, price from $2.12 per month) and CyberGhost VPN (rating 8.8/10, price from $2.17 per month). All three services unblocked all platforms tested, have sufficient speed for 4k video playback, and add an excellent level of security on top.

  9. Features of Anonine VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

The range of extra features is very limited with Anonine VPN. Ad blocking, malware and tracker blocking are completely missing from the application.

Port forwarding is available in the Anonine VPN settings to ensure that unwanted traffic is routed outside the network. The Anonine VPN uses only a public IP address that is shared among a large number of users. A static IP address is not available even for an additional fee.

A competitive advantage is the Stunnel protocol, which can disguise VPN connections as HTTPS. Thus Anonine VPN can be used in China, to unblock geo-block protected content, and other places where a VPN is undesirable.

  10. Anonine VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

The Anonine VPN loaded the test Windows laptop about the same when the connection was active, even when the application was only running in the background. The load was roughly equivalent to other services reviewed and did not negatively impact activity on the computer.

To reduce the load generated, we recommend disabling the automatic startup when connected to the Internet, which has the greatest impact on it. It is possible to exit the application completely via the icon in the system tray. The installation package Anonine VPN for Windows is around 35 MB.

  11. Anonine VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

It allows torrenting and P2P file sharing Anonine VPN on all its servers. None of them are optimized specifically for this type of traffic.

While Anonine VPN does provide a reasonably good level of anonymity by not storing logs of service usage, and the Windows app has a kill switch feature, it is not the best choice for torrenting. During our testing, we achieved relatively low download (only 42 Mb/s) and upload (8 Mb/s) speeds, which will likely hold most users back.

The best VPNs for torrents have dedicated servers for P2P transfers, faster speeds, and additional security features to ensure maximum anonymity. We can recommend CyberGhost VPN, Proton VPN Plus or NordVPN.

  12. What is the country of origin of Anonine VPN?

    • VPN Provider: Edelino Commerce Inc.
    • Country of origin: 🇸🇨 Seychelles

Anonine VPN was launched in 2009, its operator was originally based in Sweden. It was reorganized in 2014. Since then, the company behind Anonine VPN is Edelino Commerce Inc. based in Victoria, Seychelles.

Edelino Commerce Inc. also operates the private networks BoxPN VPN, FrootVPN, and the Easy Hide IP and VPN Tunnel services.

The Seychelles is a good location for the purpose of running VPNs, as the legislation there gives both operators and users a good deal of privacy. The island country is not a member of the 14 Eyes Countries grouping, which collects and shares intelligence on internet usage amongst itself.

  13. Anonine VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

Anonine VPN states that no logs with sensitive data are generated when using the service. Thus, no connection timestamps, connection lengths, information about servers used, IP addresses, or DNS requests are stored.

Only the personal data necessary to ensure the quality of the service are collected, such as username, email address, password and payment details. These are kept for 3 years after the last use Anonine VPN. Communications with customer support and information about the volume of data transferred are also stored for 2 years.

Although the operator of Anonine VPN is based in Seychelles, which is not a member of the European Union, it has set its privacy policy to be in direct compliance with the GDPR. You can request deletion of your personal data at any time by contacting technical support at support@anonine.com.

Since February 2, 2022, the operator Edelino Commerce Inc. periodically publishes the so-called Warrant Canary. This is a confirmation that it has not received a request from the police or a court to release user data within a certain period. It is not possible to inform directly about received summonses, so this is circumvented by informing the opposite.

To the best of our knowledge, no independent audit of the Anonine VPN service has taken place to date. At the same time, there is no known information that user data has been leaked. The privacy conditions of Anonine VPN are very good and outperform even some better rated VPNs.

  14. Anonine VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Customer support at Anonine VPN is provided via live chat, available on the web and mobile app. Alternatively, you can fill out the contact form on the site, or write directly to support@anonine.com.

We received a response to a test query within two days. No other methods of contacting technical support are offered by Anonine VPN.

In case of problems, help can still be sought in the FAQ section of the Anonine VPN website. There is also a blog available in the same place, which has not been updated for some time. The Anonine VPN is present on the social networks Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

  15. Anonine VPN FAQ

    What is Warrant Canary?
Warrant Canary is a way for VPN operators to report on the receipt of requests from higher authorities to release sensitive user data. Since they cannot disclose that they have received a challenge, they issue periodic acknowledgements that they have not received any requests. If on any day Warrant Canary is absent, it can be inferred that a court, police or other authorized entity has subpoenaed the operator to provide user data.

On the part of VPN operators, Warrant Canary serves as another piece to the puzzle that establishes their credibility.

Does Anonine VPN work in China?
Yes, Anonine VPN can be used in China. The credit for this goes to the Stunnel protocol, which disguises VPN connections as perfectly normal HTTPS traffic. This makes VPN connections harder to detect.
    Is Anonine VPN secure?
The Anonine VPN gives users a choice of WireGuard, OpenVPN, Stunnel, L2TP, PPTP, IKEv2 and IPSec protocols, with all transmitted data protected by strong 256-bit AES encryption. DNS protection is automatically activated when using the application, as well as the kill switch function in the case of Windows. The privacy policy for Anonine VPN is well written, so the service can be considered relatively secure.
