Unlocator VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 3 Pros

Unlocator VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 3 Pros

4.8
★★
  1. Unlocator VPN: Why Does 4.8/10 Have a Low Rating?

    • It collects a lot of personal data
    • Only 44 available servers
    • Few advanced features
    • Based in a country that monitors user activity on the Internet
    • The app is very low on hardware
    • Supports traffic on routers
    • Average speed of download (145 Mb/s) and upload (127 Mb/s)

Unlocator VPN is a service operated by the Danish company Linkwork ApS and received a relatively low rating of 4.8/10 in our evaluation.

Unlocator VPN lost the most points due to its lax approach to user privacy. It collects a significant amount of information about users, which it can hand over to the police or other authorized authorities if challenged. Denmark is a member of the 9 Eyes group, which monitors users’ internet activities and shares the data among its members.

The service lacks basic security features such as DNS protection or kill switch in mobile apps. It also lacks advanced features like multi-hop connectivity, browser add-ons, or ad blocking. Compared to rival VPNs, the offering of just 44 servers is also below average.

The advantage of Unlocator VPN is a simple desktop application that does not place high demands on device performance. In addition to computers and mobile phones, VPNs can also be used via a router, which simply secures all devices connected to the same network.

In our test, Unlocator VPN achieved fairly good transfer speeds, measuring average download 145 Mb/s and upload 127 Mb/s. In the basic configuration, we managed to unblock all streaming platforms except HBO Max and Netflix; the result can be improved with an additional SmartDNS service.

With the most affordable subscription price option of $4.99 per month, Unlocator VPN ranks among the more expensive services on the market. Because the features offered are not many, we recommend that you consider getting NordVPN (with a 9.4/10 rating for $4.07 per month) or Surfshark (rated 9.2/10, price $2.14 per month). Both services offer better value for money, more features, and are regularly audited for security.

Unlocator VPN offers subscriptions in one month, six months, one year, and two years. The longest subscription is the best value when it comes out to $4.99 on a per-month basis.

There’s also a lightweight version called Smart DNS, which can only unblock foreign content but doesn’t include VPN protection.

A trial version of Unlocator VPN is available for free for 30 days. In addition, all orders are covered by a money-back guarantee for 7 days after the order.

Subscriptions to Unlocator VPN can be paid by debit and credit card or via PayPal. Google Pay and Apple Pay are also available when ordering from the mobile app. Cryptocurrency payments are not supported.

With one subscription, Unlocator VPN can be used on 5 devices simultaneously.

The Unlocator VPN app is available for Windows and macOS computers, and Android and iOS mobile devices. The Linux alternative is not supported.

For TVs and multimedia systems, you can only use Unlocator VPN with Amazon’s Fire TV. Direct support is lacking for Android TV, Apple TV, Kodi, and Roku, as well as for PlayStation and Xbox game consoles, and alternative devices like Raspberry Pi.

Unlocator VPN supports router-based traffic, making it easy to secure all devices connected to a given network. A list of supported routers can be found on the Unlocator VPN website.

Internet browser extensions are not offered by Unlocator VPN. VPNs can’t be used to navigate the Tor network either.

  4. Unlocator VPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

The design of the Unlocator VPN desktop app is clear and simple to use; the operation was smooth with no dropouts and no stuttering. From a user perspective, we missed the option to choose between dark and light mode. The only supported language for the application is English.

When you launch the app, you’ll see a splash screen where you can connect to the VPN directly or click through to the list of servers. The first section shows the recommended servers, but it’s not clear on what basis they were selected. The individual sites are listed alphabetically, and you can save your favorite servers for easy reference. It doesn’t offer the option to automatically connect to Unlocator VPN‘s fastest server.

Individual features can be activated in the settings. One of them is to automatically start the application when the computer is turned on, or to automatically connect to the VPN afterward. In the same place, the protocol used can be changed, and logs can be generated to help technical support in troubleshooting.

On mobile, the ability to contact support directly from the app without having to search for a contact on the web is handy. On the desktop app, this option is not available.

Unlocator VPN doesn’t support split tunneling and whitelist, through which you can select apps and websites that connect directly to the internet even when the VPN is activated.

  5. Unlocator VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Unlocator VPN doesn’t limit users in the amount of data transferred, which is standard among paid VPNs.

We didn’t have the slightest problem with the speed of our VPN connection with Unlocator VPN; it’s one of the service’s strongest points. Connecting to the server took mere seconds.

In repeated tests, we measured Unlocator VPN at a fairly high average download speed of 145 Mb/s. At this speed, the VPN is suitable for downloading larger files or playing 4K video, for which a speed of at least 50 Mbps is required.

The measured upload speed of 127 Mb/s is also above average in the context of other reviewed VPNs. Unlocator VPN can easily be used for torrenting or sharing large amounts of data.

The third parameter we tested was server response speed, measured at 15 ms by Unlocator VPN. Such a response promises an uninterrupted experience when gaming or video chatting. With response speed, as opposed to download and upload speed, lower values are better.

  6. Unlocator VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      44
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      37
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇺🇸 USA
    South America 🇧🇷 Brazil
Asia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇯🇵 Japan 🇸🇬 Singapore 🇹🇭 Thailand
    Africa 🇿🇦 South Africa
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

Unlocator VPN operates 44 servers in 37 countries around the world.

The number of servers is only one indicator of quality; their configuration, load, and number of users are also important. However, compared to other reviewed services, there are fewer servers; for example, ExpressVPN offers 3,000 in 94 countries.

Servers for Unlocator VPN are spread across all continents, with Europe having the largest representation. Available locations include the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Less common countries available include Bulgaria, Hungary, Hong Kong, or Thailand. Among countries with government censorship of the Internet, servers are available in Turkey.

Unlocator VPN does not operate specially optimized servers for torrenting or gaming.

  7. Unlocator VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      No
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Although the classic DNS protection of Unlocator VPN is missing, there were no IP address or WebRTC leaks when testing the service.

Exclusively in the desktop version of the application, a kill switch function is available that disconnects the device from the Internet when the connection to the VPN server is lost. Only on desktop, the Unlocator Shield feature is available, which can block the overall internet connection when the VPN is down. However, in testing on a macOS laptop, this feature did not work.

The VPN subscription includes a SmartDNS feature that provides DNS redirection. Unlocator VPN does not offer any advanced protection.

The choice of protocols with Unlocator VPN is quite broad, with OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, IKEv2 complementing the modern WireGuard, which is set as the default. Additionally, IPSec is available in the mobile app. The protocol can be changed in the app settings in case of connection problems.

Unlocator VPN protects transmitted data via 256-bit encryption, which is considered very secure.

Unlocator VPN does not offer two-factor authentication for user account security.

  8. Unlocator VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      No
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      No
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

Unlocator VPN achieved mixed results in a test of unblocking foreign content streaming platforms.

On Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Hulu, and YouTube, we were able to play foreign content that was not available here without difficulty. While streaming from Netflix worked, it was not possible to watch videos from other countries. The HBO Max library did not load at all with Unlocator VPN activated, and the app kept reporting an error.

The service doesn’t have any dedicated servers for streaming video; you need to use the regular ones. The SmartDNS feature should have helped with better results, but it didn’t provide that benefit.

On average, the measured download speed of 145 Mb/s is sufficient for 4K video playback, for which 50 Mbps is usually quoted as necessary.

  9. Features of Unlocator VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

The advanced features menu in Unlocator VPN is very limited.

The app cannot block ads, malware, or trackers. Additionally, split tunneling is not available, which would allow you to select applications that connect directly to the Internet even when VPN protection is enabled.

Unlocator VPN does not offer multi-hop connectivity, also known as Double VPN. This principle involves connecting through two different VPN servers simultaneously, increasing the level of security and privacy.

Among the missing features is a camouflage mode that can disguise the VPN as a regular Internet connection. This feature can be useful in countries where using VPN protection can cause unnecessary problems, or it can be used for better access to streaming platforms.

A dedicated or static IP address is not available with Unlocator VPN, even at an additional cost. There is also no extra charge for Dark Web monitoring, which can help keep an eye on personal data leaking onto the Internet where it could be misused.

Overall, the range of extra features in Unlocator VPN is weak. For example, most of the features described are offered by NordVPN, which has a rating of 9.4/10 and is available from $4.07 per month.

  10. Unlocator VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

VPN applications are usually designed to not negatively impact computer performance. Unlocator VPN does this, and in terms of load, it even ranks as one of the most efficient applications tested.

The desktop application Unlocator VPN for macOS takes up only 55 MB on the hard disk, which is negligible. Unlocator VPN takes only 20 MB of RAM memory. It also uses only 0.1% of CPU performance and battery consumption.

Thus, you can use Unlocator VPN on most older devices without any problems. The app runs in the background after shutdown, even with VPN protection disabled, and can be completely exited via the system tray icon. Additionally, you can disable the automatic launch of the app when you turn on the device in the settings, thus speeding up its start.

  11. Unlocator VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Unlocator VPN does not block torrenting on its servers.

You won’t find any servers in the Unlocator VPN list that have been directly optimized for P2P transfers. During testing, some servers showed problems, and torrent sharing was not possible through them. We were mostly able to resolve the issue by changing the server. Our measured download speed of 145 Mb/s and upload speed of 127 Mb/s are suitable for torrenting.

Do not break the law when torrenting with Unlocator VPN, especially do not share copyrighted works. The terms of service state that if a user engages in illegal activities, their account may be terminated without refund.

To ensure privacy when torrenting, it is important to have a VPN activated that encrypts the data being transferred and hides the user’s real IP address. The SmartDNS feature does not provide sufficient protection.

The best VPNs for torrenting offer better protection, and some even have dedicated servers for this type of traffic. For example, we can recommend CyberGhost VPN, Ivacy VPN, or HotspotShield Premium.

  12. What is the country of origin of Unlocator VPN?

    • VPN Provider: Linkwork ApS
    • Country of origin: 🇩🇰 Denmark

The operator of Unlocator VPN is Linkwork ApS, a Danish company based in Copenhagen and founded on November 29, 2011. Its main activity is the operation of VPNs.

Denmark is a member of the 9 Eyes group of countries whose intelligence services and police can monitor users’ Internet activity to ensure security. The data collected can be shared between member countries.

The country is also a member of the European Union, so users of Unlocator VPN are covered by the GDPR data protection regulation.

  13. Unlocator VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      No
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

Unlocator VPN does not enforce a zero-log storage policy, which cost it points in our evaluation.

All user activity on Unlocator VPN is logged for 24 hours so that it can be analyzed and handed over to the police in case of illegal use of the application. Personal data, including email addresses, optional names and addresses, and anonymized diagnostic data, are collected in the long term to improve the service. Unlocator VPN monitors user IP addresses in the long term to prevent abuse of the service.

Payment information is processed by an external service provider based on the chosen method. Unlocator VPN uses cookies on its website to target the service to a specific user. It is possible to withhold consent for the collection of cookies.

In terms of the level of privacy provided, Unlocator VPN is one of the worst services on the market. If its operator receives a court order to hand over data, it must hand over all relevant data to the authorities, which is more than some other services. In addition, Unlocator VPN has not been audited by any independent party and does not publish a Transparency Report.

If you want to be assured of complete privacy and anonymity, we recommend that you prefer, for example, NordVPN or Proton VPN Plus, whose security has been repeatedly confirmed by independent audits.

  14. Unlocator VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

To contact customer support, use the form on the Unlocator VPN website, as live chat is not available. Support is quite slow; we waited several hours for answers to test questions.

If you don’t want to wait, you can try your luck in the knowledgebase with troubleshooting common issues. Although not very clear, it is extensive, and the tutorials are well-written. Phone support from Unlocator VPN is lacking; however, only some services, mostly from large corporations, provide this form. From a user’s point of view, we still miss a forum, where participants often advise correctly and faster than official support.

  15. Unlocator VPN FAQ

Unlocator VPN does not offer a free version of the VPN app. For the duration of 30 days, a free trial version is available, which includes all the features and servers as the paid version. If you’re satisfied, you can subscribe to Unlocator VPN with monthly billing, or for six months, a year, or two years with prepayment. The two-year subscription is the most cost-effective, at $4.99 per month on a per-month basis.

The security level of Unlocator VPN is good. The user can choose from several authenticated protocols, complemented by 256-bit encryption, which is considered very strong and secure. On the other hand, Unlocator VPN collects a large amount of personal data when using the application, and additionally states that it will release all information to the police or authorized authorities in the event of a legal challenge. Some competing companies, such as NordVPN, do not store any logs and have also passed a security audit.
Is Unlocator VPN a good VPN?
In our database, Unlocator VPN ranks as one of the worst VPNs, scoring 4.8/10 in the parameter test. The app only met the basic requirements for a VPN, managing to mask our real IP address and unblock some foreign streaming services. The price of the most affordable subscription option is $4.99 per month, which is quite high considering the inferior offer. For example, NordVPN, at $4.07 per month, offers more features and a higher level of anonymity and security, backed by independent audits, for a comparable price.
