OVPN 2024 Review: 2 Cons and 7 Pros

OVPN 2024 Review: 2 Cons and 7 Pros

7.4
★★★☆
  1. OVPN: RAM-Only Servers, High Speed and Excellent Anonymity

    • Only 96 servers in 20 countries
    • Only 6 simultaneously connectable devices
    • All servers are RAM-only
    • Able to unblock all streaming platforms
    • Above average download (141 Mb/s) and upload (120 Mb/s) speeds
    • Offers superior features including multi-hop connectivity
    • VPN can be used without entering email
    • Robust security and excellent privacy protection
    • Dedicated IP address can be purchased

OVPN is operated by the Swedish company OVPN Integritet AB. Although the country is a member of the 14 Eyes alliance, it has user-friendly privacy laws. OVPN earned an overall score of 7.4/10 in our test, ranking it #27 out of 90 reviewed VPNs.

OVPN lost the most points in the review due to its low number of servers, with only 96 servers on offer in 20 different locations. Competitor Surfshark, for example, has servers in 97 countries.

With a single subscription, OVPN can be used on a maximum of 6 devices simultaneously. For most users, this will probably be a sufficient number, however, for example, the aforementioned Surfshark can be used on 999 different devices.

The advantage of OVPN is the high connection speed. In repeated measurements, it has achieved average download speeds of 141 Mb/s and upload speeds of 120 Mb/s, which are sufficient for ultra-high definition video playback and for transferring bulky files. OVPN uses modern WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols and the strongest AES-256 encryption available. Both provide excellent security and a high level of anonymity.

OVPN has performed very well in unblocking video from streaming platforms. VPNs can be used directly on a wide variety of devices, and browser extensions are also available. In addition, the OVPN app offers superior multi-hop security features, split tunneling or the option to pay for a dedicated IP address.

Swedish OVPN meets all the requirements for a quality VPN, with a subscription price of $4.73, it is an interesting choice.

      Ripple :No

OVPN offers subscriptions in three different options. The least expensive is a pay-as-you-go monthly subscription priced at $12.79. More advantageous is the annual and especially the two-year pre-paid variant, which comes out to only $4.73 per month. The price can be considered acceptable, although Surfshark, for example, costs only $2.12 per month.

OVPN subscriptions can be paid by debit or credit card, PayPal, anonymously via the cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Ethereum or Monera, and also via cash sent in an envelope. For referring OVPN to friends, a free one-month subscription can be earned.

Annual and 2-year OVPN subscriptions allow simultaneous use on 6 different devices, monthly subscriptions allow VPN connection on only 4 devices. Compared to the competition, this is not enough. For example, Surfshark can be used on 999 devices simultaneously.

Support for different types of devices is very good with OVPN. The app is available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers and for Android and iOS mobile devices.

You can also use OVPN on smart NAS storage devices and on the alternative Raspberry Pi device. OVPN has the advantage of supporting use on a router, where you can easily protect all devices connected to the same network. Selected brands of routers are supported, and a guide on how to set up a VPN will help you with installation. The router counts as one device in the allowed quota.

OVPN cannot be used directly on Android TV, Apple TV or Fire TV smart TVs, Playstation and Xbox gaming consoles, or Chromebook and Roku platforms.

OVPN provides additional protection through web browser extensions for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Vivaldi.

  4. OVPN App: User-Friendliness, Whitelist, Server Selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +3 more🇩🇪 German 🇸🇪 Swedish 🇳🇴 Bokmal
    • Whitelisting:
      Yes
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

The OVPN apps for desktop and mobile devices are quite different. In the mobile app, only light mode is available and the only available feature is blocking trackers and ads. The desktop apps allow you to switch between light and dark mode and give the user more settings options. In terms of appearance, both versions of the app are hilarious.

Whitelist OVPN offers only on the Windows platform in the form of a split tunneling feature. This allows you to choose sites and apps that will connect directly to the internet even when the VPN is activated.

OVPN is available in 4 different languages.

The available connection sites are sorted alphabetically in the application. In each country, you can choose to automatically connect to the best server or manually select one. Once connected, there are continuously updated statistics on the volume of data transferred, which didn’t work very well in our case.

In the OVPN app, you can turn on notifications, activate a pop-up window with connection information, or sign up for beta testing. In this case, you will have access to non-public versions of the app, which may have flaws or be unstable.

Optionally, you can set the OVPN to launch the app and connect to the VPN as soon as the device boots.

  5. OVPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

OVPN does not limit the user in the amount of data transferred, among paid VPNs this is the standard.

Connecting to all OVPN servers was fast and it didn’t matter if we chose the nearest location or a server on the other side of the world. Transfer speeds were also above average. For speed testing, we chose a server that the application had selected as recommended.

In a repeat measurement, OVPN measured an average download speed of 141 Mb/s, which is sufficient for most internet activities, including playing 4k videos or downloading bulky files.

The average measured upload of 120 Mb/s is also suitable for uploading large files or torrenting.

The response time of the OVPN servers averaged 21 ms, which can be considered very solid. Such a response rate guarantees smooth gaming or smooth video calls. For response speed, lower is better.

  6. OVPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      96
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      20
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇮🇹 Italy 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇺🇦 Ukraine
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇺🇸 USA
    South America
    Asia 🇯🇵 Japan 🇸🇬 Singapore
    Africa
    Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia

In the context of all the VPNs reviewed, OVPN‘s server and site offerings are below average. Users can only use 96 of them in 20 different countries. For example, Private Internet Access operates 35,400 servers in 78 locations.

The lower number of servers may have an impact on stability and on connection speeds, but this has not been confirmed for OVPNs. The number of servers is only one indicator; configuration and the number of active users also play a major role. As the number of sites increases, the user has more choices when unblocking foreign content.

Traditionally, most OVPN servers are located in Europe, with Finland, Austria, Japan and Singapore among the countries available. OVPN servers are also operated in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. Servers in some of the countries with internet censorship are also unavailable.

All OVPN servers are owned directly by the company and are physically located at the site. In addition, all servers use only RAM memory, which does not allow for long-term storage of data, including users’ personal data. This contributes to a higher level of security. On the other hand, running your own servers is relatively expensive, which is perhaps why the range of sites available to the OVPN is limited.

OVPN supports automatic connection to the fastest site, or you can manually select it from a list. You can save servers to your favorites for easier access.

There are no servers specifically optimised for streaming or torrenting, but P2P sharing is not restricted.

  7. OVPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      Yes
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      Yes
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

The OVPN application has built-in DNS leak protection, which worked correctly during testing. Our DNS and real IP address remained reliably hidden.

An important kill switch is also available, which will block the internet connection in case of a VPN failure to avoid revealing the user’s IP address. You can activate the kill switch only when using the VPN, or even without it. In this case, all internet connections will be blocked.

OVPN supports the modern security protocols OpenVPN and WireGuard, and you can choose which one you prefer in the desktop application. All transmitted data is protected by 256-bit AES encryption, which is the highest currently available and is virtually unbreakable. For the WireGuard protocol, you can optionally set the period of time after which the public keys will be renewed.

In terms of extra features, the OVPN supports multi-hop connectivity, in which data traffic passes through two different VPN servers simultaneously. The advantage of multi-hop is a higher level of security, the disadvantage can be a lower transfer rate. For multi-hop, you can choose any combination of any two servers from the OVPN menu, which is interesting. Most other VPNs give users predetermined combinations of servers.

OVPN also supports connection to the Tor network, where you need to use the OpenVPN TCP protocol over port 443. An interesting feature of OVPN is BlockLAN, which blocks insecure connections on public wi-fi networks. Two-factor authentication for logging in to an OVPN user account is not available.

  8. OVPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

Directly on the OVPN website, it states that video playback is possible on all servers and that it can unblock all streaming platforms. There’s even a list of what platforms are available in each location.

We tested OVPN‘s US servers, which should support all major streaming platforms. We were able to unblock Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, YouTube, Hulu and HBO Max.

Sufficient download speed is important for smooth streaming. Our measured 141 Mb/s is plenty sufficient to play movies in the highest available 4K quality. For this, a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps is generally stated as necessary.

All in all, OVPN is a good choice if you plan to use a VPN to access blocked libraries on streaming platforms.

  9. Features of OVPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      Yes
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      Yes
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

Among the premium features, OVPN offers ad and tracker blocking, which is available in the mobile app and browser extensions. This additionally supports WebRTC blocking and automatic deletion of cookies after leaving the site. In the desktop version of the app, it is possible to activate the “Adblock DNS” protection mode, which can also handle ad blocking. Malware protection is not available on computers.

An interesting feature on Android devices is the function of checking communication with other devices connected to the same wi-fi network. You can decide whether you can share a video from your phone to your smart TV, for example.

OVPN doesn’t offer a camouflage mode that can hide an activated VPN from the ISP or website operator. Nor is monitoring for personal data leaks to the dark web available.

For an additional fee, you can order a static IP address from OVPN, which will be dedicated to one user and one device at a time.

  10. OVPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

OVPN places higher demands on device performance than other VPN applications. The percentage of battery and CPU load is different for each device, and on our test Macbook it was approximately 2.5%. Such a value may already be known in certain circumstances. OVPN has cut around 90 MB from RAM memory, which is still a negligible value for modern devices, but at the same time it is more than for the leanest applications.

A lower load can be achieved by disabling the automatic start of OVPN after the device boots. If you are not going to use the VPN, we recommend to close the OVPN application completely via the icon in the system tray.

  11. OVPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

OVPN supports torrenting on all of its servers, but at the same time, none of them are specifically optimized for P2P transfers. OVPN works easily with popular torrenting clients uTorrent, BitTorrent or Vuze. There’s even a tutorial available in the blog on the OVPN website to help you maximize the connection speeds you achieve.

Our measured download speed of 141 Mb/s and upload speed of 120 Mb/s is sufficient for torrenting.

Although OVPN does not track user activity and thus cannot detect ongoing torrent sharing, the company prohibits the use of the app for illegal activities. This includes, but is not limited to, sharing copyrighted files. If illegal activity is detected, the company may block the user’s account without compensation.

  12. What Is the Country of Origin Of OVPN?

    • VPN Provider: OVPN Integritet AB
    • Country of origin: 🇸🇪 Sweden

OVPN is operated by OVPN Integritet AB, which was founded in 2015. Since the beginning, it has been based in Sweden and has been exclusively engaged in the operation of VPNs.

Sweden has relatively favorable laws for the protection of users’ personal data, so the company is not obliged to store any data from VPN traffic. The negative news for some users may be the fact that Sweden is a member country of the 14 Eyes group. The secret services and police of the alliance members monitor users’ internet activity and have the right to request specific information if they suspect, for example, a security threat. VPN operators must hand over the data.

However, the OVPN‘s privacy policy is so good and transparent that even when a request is received, the company has virtually nothing to give up. This is also due to the use of servers with RAM memory only.

  13. OVPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

What we appreciate about OVPN is the high level of transparency. It clearly states on its website how the service works and what data it collects about users. You can even track down the names of the VPN’s founders (David Wibergh and Ruben Rehn) on the site, which is a rarity among VPNs.

The privacy policy is written simply and clearly. It shows that OVPN does not store any logs, connection times, IP addresses, or the volume of data transferred.

OVPN only stores the payment method chosen, not directly payment information such as card number. As an extra security measure, you can create an account without entering your email, which on the other hand can make it difficult to reset your password if you forget it.

The OVPN operator issues a monthly Transparency Report with information on how the service is working, data requests received and other data. OVPN claims that it has never released any data to the authorities and is also insured to cover legal costs in the event of litigation.

All servers used are owned by the OVPN operator, so no intermediary is involved in the provision of the service. At the same time, all servers use only RAM memory, so that the stored data is constantly overwritten and cannot be collected for long periods of time.

Overall, OVPN offers superior privacy protection. Perhaps the only criticism is the lack of an independent audit to confirm that the data is indeed safe. Although the company had planned one in 2017, it has not yet taken place, according to available information.

  14. OVPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Customer support is available via email at support@ovpn.com or via chat on the OVPN website. Hours of operation are weekdays only from 9:00 to 17:00 CET.

During business hours we received answers to our questions very quickly. The support staff is capable when they managed to answer all our questions in a clear manner. We appreciate the ability to contact support directly from the app and automatically include logs in the message, which can help resolve the issue faster.

Many problems can be solved without contacting support thanks to the successful FAQ section, where OVPN publishes articles explaining the various features of the application. OVPN also maintains a blog where there are dozens of articles with tips for optimizing the use of the service.

  15. OVPN FAQ

    How to use OVPN?
OVPN offers apps for a number of platforms. Users most commonly use the VPN on computers and mobile devices, where all they need to do is download the appropriate app, which is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux platforms. After launching the app, all you need to do is log in with your username and activate VPN protection.
The OVPN desktop app offers significantly more features to secure your internet connection. Users can choose from several available locations in the app. Once logged in, the application routes the Internet connection through a secure server that replaces the user’s real IP address with a fictitious server address. If someone decides to trace the IP address, it will not reach the user, but only the encrypted server.
    Is OVPN free?
OVPN is a paid service, the cheapest subscription option costs $4.73 per month. Subscription fees can be paid by credit card, PayPal, selected cryptocurrencies or cash sent by envelope.

Most subscription options are covered by a 10 days of money back guarantee. A free trial version of OVPN is not available.

    Is OVPN good?
OVPN is a reliable and well-established service, scoring 7.4/10 in our test. This puts it in #27 place among the 90 VPNs in the ranking.

OVPN offers a number of interesting features such as multi-hop, wi-fi connection protection or split tunneling. The transfer speed and security level is also above standard, all for a competitive price of $4.73 per month.
