Planet VPN Premium 2024 Review: 3 Cons and 2 Pros

7.4
★★★☆
  1. Planet VPN Premium: A Simple VPN with Browser Extensions

    • No independent audit conducted
    • Lower-than-average number of servers (1,260) and countries (62)
    • Provider’s unclear website
    • Web browser and router extensions available
    • User-friendly

Planet VPN Premium was established in 2022, renamed from its previous identity as RUSVPN. This name did not signify a Russian origin, rather it stood for “Reliable, Unlimited, and Secure”.

This service is a paid version of the free offering, Planet VPN Free. As an upgrade, it allows connection to up to 10 devices simultaneously and provides unlimited data transfers.

Planet VPN Premium users can choose from 1,260 servers spread across 62 countries worldwide. While it allows for IP address changes within a country, it does not enable the selection of a specific server. Planet VPN Premium supports both streaming and torrenting. If you need a VPN for accessing foreign content, Planet VPN Premium is sufficient, although it doesn’t offer the same features as top-tier services like NordVPN or Surfshark.

Planet VPN Premium’s application is available for common operating systems. Browser extensions with some additional features not directly available in the app are also offered. The design and usability of the application are intuitive, even for less experienced users.

Basic features such as fast server selection and kill switch are available. Additionally, a whitelisting feature for trusted websites is included in the browser extension.

Planet VPN Premium does not store any logs or personal data, except for the email required for account creation. Payments can be made via card or selected cryptocurrencies.

  2. Planet VPN Premium Subscription: Discount Code, Free Trial, Money Back Guarantee…

    • Your Price: $8.9573% off  $2.39 /mo (10 devices)

Planet VPN Premium does not offer a free trial version. However, for trial purposes, the free version Planet VPN Free can be used. In the app description on the App Store, a 7-day trial version is available when you purchase a subscription.

Subscription options include 1-month, 1-year, and 3-year terms, with the 3-year subscription being the most affordable. Planet VPN Premium provides a refund within 30 days of purchasing a year-long or longer subscription, or within 30 days for monthly subscriptions. Refunds can only be requested once per email address. If you sign up again with your email at Planet VPN Premium, you will not be eligible for a refund.

Subscription payment for Planet VPN Premium can be made via credit card or cryptocurrency, with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and other lesser-known cryptocurrencies accepted.

Planet VPN Premium supports usage on up to 10 devices concurrently. The app is available for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux devices.

To safeguard multiple devices, you can install Planet VPN Premium on your router. Several manufacturers including TP-Link, Asus, ZyXEL, and others are supported. The configuration can be downloaded from your profile on the Planet VPN Premium website, or by following the VPN router setup tutorial.

Extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Yandex web browsers, which some competing VPN providers do not offer, are available. Planet VPN Premium users can also download configuration profiles for OpenVPN.

However, Planet VPN Premium is not available for game consoles or NAS.

  4. Planet VPN Premium App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +4 more🇩🇪 German 🇪🇸 Spanish 🇫🇷 French 🇷🇺 Russian
    • Whitelisting:
      Yes
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

Planet VPN Premium’s desktop app is available in 5 languages, including English, while the browser extension supports it too. The mobile app offers additional languages.

Both the desktop and mobile apps are easy to use. The mobile app takes a bit longer to launch than its competitors. The app features two windows. The first window lets users select the country they want to connect to and change the server. Activating or deactivating the VPN is done via a button and is relatively quick, even when connecting to servers on the opposite side of the world.

The second window offers advanced settings, where users can set an automatic connection to the last used, recommended, or a random site, and select a protocol from the OpenVPN UDP or TCP menu. The mobile app also offers the IKEv2 protocol. This window also provides a kill switch that disconnects users from the internet if the VPN server connection fails. Information about the remaining subscription length is also displayed here.

The Planet VPN Premium application lacks some features commonly offered by its competitors. For example, the VPN whitelist for selecting websites to be visited without using a VPN is not available. The VPN whitelist is accessible through the Planet VPN Premium browser extension.

Like all paid services, Planet VPN Premium does not limit the amount of data transferred. This makes it ideal for downloading torrents and streaming videos over the VPN.

  5. Planet VPN Premium Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

On the desktop, establishing a connection was quick and seamless. However, with the mobile app, the responses to the connect or disconnect commands are slower.

During our connection tests, we tried all the offered protocols. OpenVPN UDP was the fastest, followed closely by IKEv2. The average download speed for Planet VPN Premium was 15 Mb/s, which is not sufficient for rapid file downloads and 4K streaming. For the latter, a speed of at least 50 Mbps is recommended.

The measured upload speed of 8 Mb/s is rather average, but sufficient for problem-free file uploads.

Low latency is essential for smooth online gaming. With a latency of 49 ms, Planet VPN Premium is somewhat slower compared to other providers. Unlike download and upload speeds, a lower value is better for response time.

  6. Planet VPN Premium Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      1,260
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:

The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇦🇱 Albania 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇾 Belarus 🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇨🇾 Cyprus 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇲🇩 Moldova 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇷🇸 Serbia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine

Planet VPN Premium provides access to 1,260 servers across 62 countries worldwide. In the application, users can select a specific country but not a particular server. Once connected to a server, the “Change IP” button will appear; clicking it will change the displayed IP address.

Upon launching the Planet VPN Premium application, users can opt to connect to the fastest server currently available. This option, however, is only accessible when the application first starts. If you change the connection country while the VPN is active, you won’t know the fastest server at that point. To reconnect to the fastest server, you need to restart the app. Other options after starting the application include connecting to a random server or reconnecting to the most recently used server.

Planet VPN Premium offers servers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia. Servers are also available in countries known for internet censorship, such as Belarus, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and South Africa. China, however, is not included in the list of available countries. All protocols and features are available across all servers.

In comparison, competitor VPN providers offer access to significantly more countries and servers. For example, CyberGhost VPN operates 9,264 servers in 89 countries worldwide, while NordVPN has 5,813 servers in 59 countries.

  7. Planet VPN Premium Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Our tests revealed no DNS or IP address leaks while using Planet VPN Premium, effectively concealing our real IPv4 address when the VPN was activated.

Planet VPN Premium employs AES 256-bit encryption and allows users to choose between OpenVPN’s UDP/TCP and IKEv2 protocols in the app. The IKEv2 protocol, however, is only available in the mobile app. These protocols are tried and tested, secure, and commonly used by other VPN providers. Notably, the modern WireGuard protocol is not supported by Planet VPN Premium.

Additionally, Planet VPN Premium does not offer two-factor authentication for added account security.

A kill switch feature safeguards users from unprotected internet access by severing the internet connection if the VPN fails, thereby preventing data leakage or compromise of the user’s real IP address.

Unfortunately, Planet VPN Premium does not support multi-hop connections, which involve connecting through two servers consecutively. Also, it lacks split tunneling support, which allows certain applications to bypass the VPN.

  8. Planet VPN Premium & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      No
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

Planet VPN Premium doesn’t operate any servers specifically optimized for streaming. However, its site claims that all its servers support unblocking streaming video, specifically mentioning YouTube and sports streaming.

In our testing, we attempted to unblock local content on popular streaming platforms using Planet VPN Premium. We managed to unblock HBO Max, Netflix, YouTube, and Disney Plus. However, we could not unblock streaming video on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Sometimes, successful server connections only occurred on the second attempt, though browser extensions provided better results. Data transfer speeds were sufficient for streaming 4K videos, even when using remote servers.

For smooth streaming video unblocking, we suggest opting for a competitor service. For instance, NordVPN can unblock all tested streaming platforms, provides unlimited data transfer, and offers high download speeds of up to 183 Mb/s.

  9. Features of Planet VPN Premium: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      Yes
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      Yes
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

The Planet VPN Premium application doesn’t provide ad blocking, malware blocking, or tracker blocking features.

However, we found these features in a browser extension where ad blocking, cookie blocking, tracker blocking, and history saving can be set up. You can also specify sites to be exempted from these rules. With the browser add-on, websites can be whitelisted, ensuring the VPN will never activate for these sites.

The standard feature for paid services, a kill switch, is available with Planet VPN Premium. It prevents unprotected internet browsing in case of a VPN disconnect by instantly cutting off internet access.

Planet VPN Premium does not provide split tunneling for selecting applications to connect outside of the VPN. It also doesn’t offer the option to choose secure Wi-Fi networks where connection protection isn’t necessary.

Although Planet VPN Premium‘s website mentions a Double VPN option (another term for the Multi-Hop feature), we couldn’t find or test this feature, and the same applies to Onion-Over-VPN.

Advanced features like camouflage mode, dedicated IP address, or automatic IP address changes for enhanced privacy are not provided by Planet VPN Premium.

Planet VPN Premium does offer additional web-based tools on their website to check device security. These include a DNS leak check and IP address check, which can also assess the functionality of other VPNs. It can also check for a possible WebRTC leak.

One handy tool is an online antivirus, where a file can be uploaded to the web interface or a link to a webpage can be inserted for a security check. The password generator allows users to specify the desired password length and character combinations, instantly creating a random password.

  10. Planet VPN Premium‘s CPU usage and App Performance

The applications of Planet VPN Premium are designed to operate seamlessly in the background of your computer, phone, or other devices.

During usage, our monitoring revealed that Planet VPN Premium‘s application on a MacBook Air used negligible CPU (max 0.4%), battery (max 0.3%), and RAM (up to 40 MB). Such values do not interfere with the normal operation of the device, with minor fluctuations only occurring when connecting to a server. On the hard disk, the application uses a maximum of 50 MB.

  11. Planet VPN Premium Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Planet VPN Premium doesn’t operate any servers dedicated to P2P file sharing or torrenting. However, torrenting is permitted on all servers, enabling anonymous file downloading.

When connected to the fastest server, the download speed with Planet VPN Premium was sufficient for downloading larger files. As the app doesn’t limit the amount of data transferred, it can be utilized for torrenting.

  12. What is the country of origin of Planet VPN Premium?

    • VPN Provider: Free VPN Planet S.R.L.
    • Country of origin: 🇷🇴 Romania

Planet VPN Premium, initially established as RUSVPN in 2017, took on its current name in 2022. The service is run by FREE VPN PLANET S.R.L., a company based in Romania.

Romania is not a participant in the 5/9/14 Eyes alliance, in contrast to countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These nations collaborate to gather user data and share it among their intelligence agencies.

In line with its privacy policy, Planet VPN Premium is obliged to comply with lawful requests to release data. However, it emphasizes that it cannot release data it does not possess.

  13. Planet VPN Premium and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

Planet VPN Premium places high priority on user privacy, aiming to protect users’ privacy online. To this end, the VPN doesn’t retain any more data than necessary for its operations.

Given the laws of its jurisdiction, Planet VPN Premium is not obligated to store logs or any user activity on its network. Only the email address used to maintain the account is needed. It provides users with the option to pay anonymously via Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, with no requirement to provide additional personal information. When payment is made with a card, a unique ID is assigned to the payment and no card number or other information is retained.

Requests for data release from governmental agencies, the Copyright Office or other authorities are dealt with by the company’s legal department. As Planet VPN Premium does not retain any information about user activity, it cannot release user identities.

If legal changes compel Planet VPN Premium to collect user data, affected users will be notified. The company will strive to sidestep this obligation by changing jurisdiction or terminating operations.

Planet VPN Premium‘s website employs Google Analytics to examine visitor data.

There is no third-party audit on Planet VPN Premium‘s app security, something other VPN service providers have done.

  14. Planet VPN Premium Support: Chat, e-mail…

Like most VPN providers, Planet VPN Premium does not offer a public phone number for technical support. The primary mode of communication is via email, and queries or issues can be directed to support@freevpnplanet.com.

The company’s website provides an option to reach out to support via a form, accessible by clicking on the button at the lower right corner of the page. Tech support assures 24/7 availability. In a test inquiry submitted through the contact form, we received a reply after 15 hours.

Direct communication with support from the app is not available, neither is live chat. There isn’t a knowledge base or a forum where users can offer advice and share experiences.

Planet VPN Premium is active on social media and maintains a blog where users can learn about data security, using VPNs, and different features.
