   Oeck VPN takes a unique approach to VPN protection compared to its competitors. Although it only covers four countries, multiple servers within each datacenter are utilized. The SmartRouting technology automatically selects the fastest server.

   Oeck VPN provides an app for Windows, Linux, and Android. To use the VPN on a macOS or iOS device, you’ll need to download the Passepartout client and register your account with Oeck VPN. Although Passepartout’s app has a better interface than the Android or Windows versions, several competitors offer more user-friendly apps. Furthermore, Passepartout lacks some features.

   For all platforms, some account settings must be managed on the Oeck VPN website rather than directly in the app. The service could improve by enabling all settings in one location.

   Within the app, users can activate the VPN, select a location, choose an encryption method, and view logs to send to support in case of technical issues. For the Windows app, a kill switch can be activated, which unexpectedly blocked our internet even when it wasn’t required. The app also provides an “Obfuscation” function to conceal the VPN connection.

   Passepartout supports additional features such as selecting secure wi-fi networks or Siri control. The app for Apple devices is available in multiple languages, while other versions are only in English.

   Unfortunately, the app lacks an automatic connection feature upon device start-up and solely allows VPN launching after account login. Oeck VPN also does not offer a whitelist option for secure apps and websites to directly connect to the internet, even with VPN protection activated. A list of blocked sites can be created, but this feature is only available through a user account on the Oeck VPN website.

   Server connection was fast, which may be due to Oeck VPN‘s unique operation. Users only choose the connection location, and the smartRouting function ensures a connection to the fastest available server. An automatic connection to the fastest server is not available. However, users can disable the smartRouting function and manually select the server.

   During our tests, we measured an average download speed of 67 Mb/s, which is below average compared to other VPNs. Still, this speed is sufficient for watching 4K video, which typically requires 50 Mbps.

   The upload speed of 133 Mb/s is impressive, adequately supporting the upload of large data volumes.

   However, the server response speed was disappointing, averaging 126 ms in repeated measurements. For online gaming, an uninterrupted experience requires a maximum response time of 50 ms. Response times of up to 20 ms provide a smooth gaming experience without any perceptible issues.

   Top-rated VPNs have lower response speeds. For example, we measured an average of 10 ms for Surfshark and 7 ms for AdGuard VPN. Lower response speeds are preferable.

   Oeck VPN operates differently from traditional VPNs in several ways. The service does not disclose the exact number of servers (estimated to be around 5); users merely choose from the available regions. The smartRouting function automatically selects the fastest server.

   Available locations include Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, London in the UK, and Seattle in the US. Oeck VPN does not provide servers in other countries. Amsterdam servers support torrenting.

   To use Oeck VPN to unblock Netflix or other foreign content, users don’t need to log into a server in that location. They can simply select a country in the profile settings on the Oeck VPN website, and the connection will take place in the background without any adjustments in the app.

   Oeck VPN operates its own servers, which rely solely on RAM. The company does not use hard drives. RAM continuously overwrites and deletes data, making it technically impossible to store user data, thereby enhancing user security.

   The service also employs a proxy network that can bypass the geolocation restrictions of streaming platforms. To achieve this, Oeck VPN utilizes servers from an external provider, over which it does not have full control.

   Oeck VPN comes with built-in DNS protection, which can be adjusted in the profile on the site. During our testing, no DNS leaks were detected and our real IP address was effectively hidden. However, there’s no leak protection setting available via WebRTC.

   The Kill Switch is only available for Windows devices and does not exist in the Passepartout app for Apple devices. In our experience, the kill switch function on Windows was somewhat unreliable, as it disconnected us from the Internet several times without any apparent reason, forcing us to restart the Oeck VPN app to reconnect.

   The only available protocol is OpenVPN, a secure method used by numerous services. The data transmitted is protected by either 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption.

   Within the official Oeck VPN application, there’s an “Obfuscation” feature available to disguise the VPN connection from ISPs or streaming service providers.

   To log into the Oeck VPN web profile, two-factor authentication can be activated. This enhances security by requiring a code from the mobile app or a code sent to the registered email address in addition to the password.

   During our testing of Oeck VPN, we managed to unblock streams from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Hulu. However, we encountered problems when trying to watch videos on Disney Plus and, surprisingly, YouTube. For unblocking these streams, we suggest considering alternatives such as ExpressVPN or Surfshark.

   The data transfer rate of 67 Mb/s was ample for 4K video playback, which typically requires around 50 Mbps. The video did not stutter during playback.

   If you wish to use Oeck VPN to unblock Netflix streaming, you’ll need to set the preferred country in the user profile on the site, as well as the channel for each region.

   Certain streaming platforms counteract geo-blocking by denying access to the site from VPN provider IP addresses. In such cases, enabling the “Obfuscation” feature in Oeck VPN may prove helpful as it disguises VPN connections.

   The Windows app also features a Kill Switch, which, as mentioned earlier, didn’t perform well during our testing. It disconnected us from the Internet without apparent reason, requiring us to restart the Oeck VPN application.

   Oeck VPN does not offer features like multi-hop connection, split tunneling, or dark web data leak monitoring.

   For an additional fee, Passepartout can be purchased to create a list of secure wi-fi networks. However, Oeck VPN does not provide a static or dedicated IP address, even for an extra charge.

10. Oeck VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

    The Oeck VPN application has minimal impact on device load. We noticed slight fluctuations only during connection and disconnection from the server.

    We did not observe the VPN running on the MacBook when testing the Passepartout app. Based on task manager statistics, the application used 0.2% of the computer’s CPU and 0.1% of the battery when the MacBook was not connected to power.

    The Oeck VPN app uses about 45-50 MB of RAM, which is average for VPN apps. It occupies 30 MB of disk space on Passepartout, 40 MB on the Windows app, and just 10 MB on the Android app.

    If you completely shut down the app, it won’t put any load on your computer. By default, the VPN has the “Keep Alive on Sleep” feature enabled, which allows it to run in the background even when the computer is asleep. Turning off this feature can help extend battery life.
