Oeck VPN 2024 Review: 5 Cons and 4 Pros

Oeck VPN 2024 Review: 5 Cons and 4 Pros

5.8
★★☆
  1. Oeck VPN Exclusively Operates RAM Servers

    • Available only in English
    • Limited additional features
    • Servers in only 4 countries
    • Unnecessary internet connection blockages by the kill switch
    • Poor server response (126 ms)
    • Unblocks foreign Netflix content
    • Can set up to 100 user profiles under one account
    • Transparent privacy policy
    • Operates solely on RAM servers

Oeck VPN takes a unique approach to VPN protection compared to its competitors. Although it only covers four countries, multiple servers within each datacenter are utilized. The SmartRouting technology automatically selects the fastest server.

The service is run by OECK Limited, a company registered in Hong Kong, a region known for its robust data protection laws. The terms and conditions of Oeck VPN are transparent, and the service collects minimal user data. To enhance anonymity, subscriptions can be paid using cryptocurrencies. An audit from a reputable company could lend even more credibility to the VPN.

Oeck VPN lost points in our evaluation for lacking advanced features such as split tunneling or multi-hop, which top VPNs like NordVPN and Surfshark offer.

We were not particularly impressed with Oeck VPN‘s user interface. Its graphic design is weak, and the application lacks user-friendliness. It is not available for macOS and iOS devices, requiring users to rely on the external app, Passepartout, which itself lacks some features. Moreover, certain service settings can only be adjusted through the user’s online profile on the Oeck VPN website.

  2. Oeck VPN Subscription: Discount Code, Free Trial, Money Back Guarantee…

    • Your Price: $17.1259% off  $6.97 /mo (6 devices)

      Ripple :No

Oeck VPN provides subscription options for 7 days, 1 month, and 1 year. While the 7-day subscription is ideal for short-term usage, the 1-year subscription offers the best value. The discounted price is $6.97 per month.

Payments can be made with debit and credit cards, PayPal, or with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin for the annual lump sum payment. Although the privacy policy mentions the option of cash payments, this method is not publicly offered.

Neither a trial version nor a free alternative of Oeck VPN is available. If you are dissatisfied with Oeck VPN, you can claim a refund within 30 days. This guarantee can only be used once a year.

A maximum of 6 devices can be connected to one Oeck VPN account, and up to 100 different profiles with individual device settings can be created simultaneously.

Oeck VPN can be used on up to 6 devices simultaneously.

The VPN is compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux devices. For Apple devices, Oeck VPN does not have its proprietary app but requires the usage of the Passepartout client. Users sign in using the same credentials as their Oeck VPN account.

One advantage of Oeck VPN is its support for Asus and Open WRT routers. To set it up, users need to generate an ovpn file on the Oeck VPN website and install it on the router as instructed.

Oeck VPN does not directly support usage on smart TVs, game consoles, Raspberry Pi, nVidia Shield, or Chromecast.

  4. Oeck VPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

Oeck VPN provides an app for Windows, Linux, and Android. To use the VPN on a macOS or iOS device, you’ll need to download the Passepartout client and register your account with Oeck VPN. Although Passepartout’s app has a better interface than the Android or Windows versions, several competitors offer more user-friendly apps. Furthermore, Passepartout lacks some features.

For all platforms, some account settings must be managed on the Oeck VPN website rather than directly in the app. The service could improve by enabling all settings in one location.

Within the app, users can activate the VPN, select a location, choose an encryption method, and view logs to send to support in case of technical issues. For the Windows app, a kill switch can be activated, which unexpectedly blocked our internet even when it wasn’t required. The app also provides an “Obfuscation” function to conceal the VPN connection.

Passepartout supports additional features such as selecting secure wi-fi networks or Siri control. The app for Apple devices is available in multiple languages, while other versions are only in English.

Unfortunately, the app lacks an automatic connection feature upon device start-up and solely allows VPN launching after account login. Oeck VPN also does not offer a whitelist option for secure apps and websites to directly connect to the internet, even with VPN protection activated. A list of blocked sites can be created, but this feature is only available through a user account on the Oeck VPN website.

  5. Oeck VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Subscriptions to Oeck VPN include unlimited data transfer, a standard feature for paid VPNs.

Server connection was fast, which may be due to Oeck VPN‘s unique operation. Users only choose the connection location, and the smartRouting function ensures a connection to the fastest available server. An automatic connection to the fastest server is not available. However, users can disable the smartRouting function and manually select the server.

During our tests, we measured an average download speed of 67 Mb/s, which is below average compared to other VPNs. Still, this speed is sufficient for watching 4K video, which typically requires 50 Mbps.

The upload speed of 133 Mb/s is impressive, adequately supporting the upload of large data volumes.

However, the server response speed was disappointing, averaging 126 ms in repeated measurements. For online gaming, an uninterrupted experience requires a maximum response time of 50 ms. Response times of up to 20 ms provide a smooth gaming experience without any perceptible issues.

Top-rated VPNs have lower response speeds. For example, we measured an average of 10 ms for Surfshark and 7 ms for AdGuard VPN. Lower response speeds are preferable.

  6. Oeck VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      5
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      4
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
Europe 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
    North America 🇺🇸 USA
    South America
    Asia
    Africa
    Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia

Oeck VPN operates differently from traditional VPNs in several ways. The service does not disclose the exact number of servers (estimated to be around 5); users merely choose from the available regions. The smartRouting function automatically selects the fastest server.

Available locations include Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, London in the UK, and Seattle in the US. Oeck VPN does not provide servers in other countries. Amsterdam servers support torrenting.

To use Oeck VPN to unblock Netflix or other foreign content, users don’t need to log into a server in that location. They can simply select a country in the profile settings on the Oeck VPN website, and the connection will take place in the background without any adjustments in the app.

Oeck VPN operates its own servers, which rely solely on RAM. The company does not use hard drives. RAM continuously overwrites and deletes data, making it technically impossible to store user data, thereby enhancing user security.

The service also employs a proxy network that can bypass the geolocation restrictions of streaming platforms. To achieve this, Oeck VPN utilizes servers from an external provider, over which it does not have full control.

Oeck VPN does not offer a multi-hop feature that routes connections through two different sites simultaneously, thereby providing more effective user privacy protection.

  7. Oeck VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Oeck VPN comes with built-in DNS protection, which can be adjusted in the profile on the site. During our testing, no DNS leaks were detected and our real IP address was effectively hidden. However, there’s no leak protection setting available via WebRTC.

The Kill Switch is only available for Windows devices and does not exist in the Passepartout app for Apple devices. In our experience, the kill switch function on Windows was somewhat unreliable, as it disconnected us from the Internet several times without any apparent reason, forcing us to restart the Oeck VPN app to reconnect.

The only available protocol is OpenVPN, a secure method used by numerous services. The data transmitted is protected by either 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption.

Within the official Oeck VPN application, there’s an “Obfuscation” feature available to disguise the VPN connection from ISPs or streaming service providers.

To log into the Oeck VPN web profile, two-factor authentication can be activated. This enhances security by requiring a code from the mobile app or a code sent to the registered email address in addition to the password.

  8. Oeck VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      Yes
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      No
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      No
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

During our testing of Oeck VPN, we managed to unblock streams from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Hulu. However, we encountered problems when trying to watch videos on Disney Plus and, surprisingly, YouTube. For unblocking these streams, we suggest considering alternatives such as ExpressVPN or Surfshark.

The data transfer rate of 67 Mb/s was ample for 4K video playback, which typically requires around 50 Mbps. The video did not stutter during playback.

If you wish to use Oeck VPN to unblock Netflix streaming, you’ll need to set the preferred country in the user profile on the site, as well as the channel for each region.

Certain streaming platforms counteract geo-blocking by denying access to the site from VPN provider IP addresses. In such cases, enabling the “Obfuscation” feature in Oeck VPN may prove helpful as it disguises VPN connections.

  9. Features of Oeck VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      Yes
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      Yes
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      Yes
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

Oeck VPN provides ad blocking as part of its Cerberus feature, which can be activated via the web profile. You can also set up blocking for malware, social networking, or adult content sites. For each profile created, a DNS filter or website block can be set individually, even if the website isn’t universally banned.

The Windows app also features a Kill Switch, which, as mentioned earlier, didn’t perform well during our testing. It disconnected us from the Internet without apparent reason, requiring us to restart the Oeck VPN application.

Oeck VPN does not offer features like multi-hop connection, split tunneling, or dark web data leak monitoring.

For an additional fee, Passepartout can be purchased to create a list of secure wi-fi networks. However, Oeck VPN does not provide a static or dedicated IP address, even for an extra charge.

  10. Oeck VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

The Oeck VPN application has minimal impact on device load. We noticed slight fluctuations only during connection and disconnection from the server.

We did not observe the VPN running on the MacBook when testing the Passepartout app. Based on task manager statistics, the application used 0.2% of the computer’s CPU and 0.1% of the battery when the MacBook was not connected to power.

The Oeck VPN app uses about 45-50 MB of RAM, which is average for VPN apps. It occupies 30 MB of disk space on Passepartout, 40 MB on the Windows app, and just 10 MB on the Android app.

If you completely shut down the app, it won’t put any load on your computer. By default, the VPN has the “Keep Alive on Sleep” feature enabled, which allows it to run in the background even when the computer is asleep. Turning off this feature can help extend battery life.

  11. Oeck VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Oeck VPN supports torrenting on all of its servers.

The Oeck VPN servers in Amsterdam are even optimized for torrent sharing. We measured download speeds of 67 Mb/s and upload speeds of 133 Mb/s, which are more than sufficient for torrenting.

Common torrenting clients, including BitTorrent, can be used with Oeck VPN.

  12. What is the country of origin of Oeck VPN?

    • VPN Provider: Oeck Limited
    • Country of origin: 🇭🇰 Hong Kong

Oeck VPN is operated by Oeck Limited, a company founded in 2019 in Hong Kong. This company is exclusively dedicated to the operation and development of VPNs.

Hong Kong is not a member of the 5/9/14 Eyes alliance of countries that monitor internet activity and share obtained information among themselves. Additionally, local laws provide robust protection for internet users. However, due to concerns about potential Chinese interference in local legislation leading to stricter data storage rules, Oeck VPN plans to relocate to Singapore.

Oeck VPN does not have any physical servers in Hong Kong.

  13. Oeck VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

The Oeck VPN website clearly states that it does not retain any user data related to the usage of the service that could be handed over to authorities. Its privacy policy is succinct and unambiguous.

However, certain user data is stored. Oeck VPN collects email addresses to manage user accounts. Additionally, it keeps track of the number of devices connected under a single account to ensure adherence to the limit of 6 devices.

User account settings are also stored on Oeck VPN servers. Payment providers may access payment data, but this is beyond the control of Oeck VPN. This can be circumvented by making payments using cryptocurrencies. The VPN also monitors the current server load to prevent overloading.

Communication with technical support is facilitated through tickets, which are deleted 48 hours after closure. Notifications of responses from support staff arrive via email, but the response itself is not included in the email.

In the event of a legally binding request for user data release, the only information Oeck VPN possesses is the user’s email address, which cannot be linked to any activities.

The Oeck VPN website utilizes cookies to enhance the user experience.

The company issues a daily “Warrant Canary” to officially declare any requests for user data. To bolster security and credibility, we suggest an independent audit of the application’s security at Oeck VPN.

  14. Oeck VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Technical support at Oeck VPN is only available through a form within the user account. Simply click on “Support” in the header and choose whether to access the user guide or create a ticket.

Under the “Technical Support” section, all queries and requests are listed. Oeck VPN responded to test inquiries within a few hours, and the responses were satisfactory.

We found the absence of live chat support at Oeck VPN a drawback, as it could have expedited responses to simple queries. Additionally, Oeck VPN does not provide a chatbot to guide users to relevant areas within the knowledge base.

The user guide provided by Oeck VPN is relatively brief. A better source of information is the community forum, where users can interact and share knowledge.

  15. Oeck VPN FAQ

    Is Oeck VPN secure?
Oeck VPN‘s security level is adequate for typical use. The service only collects minimal personal data, offers an authenticated protocol, up to 256-bit encryption, and accepts cryptocurrency payments.

However, the kill switch feature, which is only available for Windows devices, poses a limitation. During our tests, this feature malfunctioned, causing internet disconnection even when there was no disruption with the VPN server.

    Is Oeck VPN free?
Oeck VPN is a subscription-based service. The most affordable subscription plan, offering the longest validity, costs $6.97 per month. Oeck VPN does not offer a free version or a trial period.

However, after paying the subscription fee, you have a 30 days of money-back guarantee. This option can be availed by each user once every 12 months.

How well does Oeck VPN perform?

Oeck VPN will meet the demands of most typical users. The VPN reliably conceals the actual IP address, prevents DNS leaks, and unblocks overseas streaming content. For basic use, this is more than sufficient.

If you’re seeking advanced security features from a VPN, such as multi-hop connectivity, a fully operational kill switch, or advanced WireGuard protocols, we recommend trying a different solution. For instance, the aforementioned features are supported by Private Internet Access or NordVPN.
