Vipre Internet Shield VPN: Why Did It Score 6.4/10 in the Test?

    • The app is only available for basic platforms
    • Orders are processed manually, VPN cannot be used immediately after payment
    • Only 80 servers
    • Lacks important kill switch security feature
    • Minimum additional features included
    • Slow customer support
    • Simple and clear application
    • Able to unblock Netflix and other streaming platforms
    • VPN can be conveniently combined with the company’s other products

Vipre Internet Shield VPN is a product of the American company ThreatTrack Security, Inc. which is a part of Ziff Davis, Inc. Its other products include IPVanish VPN and StrongVPN. In our test, Vipre Internet Shield VPN scored 6.4/10, making it the #63 best VPN among 90 reviewed.

In particular, Vipre Internet Shield VPN loses points in the rating for its very small network of just 80 servers. This can cause connectivity issues during peak times when most users are active. The app lacks most of the additional features that competing VPN providers commonly offer. For example, it lacks the important kill switch, whitelisting, or ad and malware blocking.

The app is only available for the most commonly used operating systems; use on a router, for example, is not possible at all. Vipre Internet Shield VPN‘s customer support is also very weak despite the large company behind it, we waited several days for answers to simple questions.

Surprising to the point of bizarre was the order processing, which is most likely still done manually. When paying by card, it is standard with VPN operators that you can start using the service immediately after paying the subscription fee. With Vipre Internet Shield VPN, we didn’t receive our registration key until the next day.

The company’s headquarters may put some users off, as the US is a member of the 5 Eyes alliance, whose secret services monitor users’ internet activity. They can pass on the information they gather to each other.

The advantage of Vipre Internet Shield VPN is a simple and reliable application that can be operated by less experienced users. The VPN was able to access the foreign libraries of most streaming platforms including Netflix, YouTube and Disney Plus. Along with the VPN, you can order antivirus solutions and other software to protect you while using the internet for a discounted price.

Among the less common features, Vipre Internet Shield VPN offers features such as “Scramble”, which works similar to camouflage mode and can disguise the VPN as a regular internet connection.

  2. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Subscription: Discount Code, Free Trial, Money Back Guarantee…

    • Your Price: $13.3897% off  $4.68 /mo (10 devices)
    • Money Back Guarantee: Yes (30 days)
    • Free Trial: No
    • Cryptocurrency payments:
      No
      Bitcoin :No
      Dash :No
      Ethereum :No
      Ripple :No

Somewhat surprisingly, Vipre Internet Shield VPN doesn’t offer any flexible subscriptions that can be paid monthly, for example. The shortest subscription period available is one year with a price of $13.38 per month. A more convenient option is a two-year and three-year subscription, where the price is only $4.68 per month.

VPNs can also be purchased as part of the “Privacy Bundle” and “Ultimate Security Bundle”, which also include a tool to protect the user’s device, antivirus and other additional services.

Debit or credit card, bank transfer and PayPal can be used to pay for a Vipre Internet Shield VPN subscription. Anonymous payment via cryptocurrency is not available. A major inconvenience is that when paying by card, you have to wait for the order to be processed, which can take up to the next day. This makes it impossible to use the VPN immediately.

All orders are covered by a 30 days of money-back guarantee, just contact customer support to claim it. The trial version of Vipre Internet Shield VPN is not available.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN can be used on 10 devices at the same time, which will probably be enough for most users. However, Surfshark and some other VPNs give you the ability to connect simultaneously from up to 999 different devices.

The Vipre Internet Shield VPN app is only available for Windows and macOS computers and Android and iOS mobile devices. It can be downloaded easily on the company’s website.

The VPN cannot be used on Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV or Roku smart TVs, Playstation and Xbox gaming consoles, or on alternative Chromebook or Raspberry Pi devices. Vipre Internet Shield VPN also lacks support for router traffic, where it would be possible to simply secure all devices connected to a single network.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN does not offer web browser extensions.

  4. Vipre Internet Shield VPN App: User-Friendliness, Whitelist, Server Selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

The Vipre Internet Shield VPN app varies in its interface and graphical design from platform to platform. It also offers different features and slightly different options.

The desktop app is generally quite simple to use, as it is not the company’s main product. The clarity is partly due to the fact that it does not offer too many features, the only language available is English. There is only a light mode, which on the test Macbook made the server locations in the list unreadable.

The connection location is selected from the list either by country or by city. Locations are sorted alphabetically. With a single click, you can choose to connect to the last server used or the fastest one at the time. You can also set the app to start automatically when the device boots and connect to the VPN server automatically.

A drawback is the lack of a whitelist function, which allows you to select apps and websites that will connect directly to the internet, while others will be protected by the constantly activated VPN.

  5. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Vipre Internet Shield VPN does not limit the user in any way in the amount of data transferred, it is a standard among paid VPNs.

We tested the transfer speeds of Vipre Internet Shield VPN with the option of connecting to the fastest server, the results achieved can be described as good. The app uses different protocols on different devices, selecting them automatically to achieve maximum speed.

The average download value reached 111 Mb/s, which is sufficient for playing ultra-high resolution 4k videos, for example. For this, a threshold of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary.

Even with an upload speed of 68 Mb/s, Vipre Internet Shield VPN does not stand out from the ranks of the reviewed VPNs. While it’s not the best result, for example, FastestVPN measured an average upload of 254 Mb/s, the value is nevertheless sufficient for torrenting and other transfer of bulky files.

An important qualitative parameter is the response speed, which plays a role especially for video calls or computer gaming. We measured an average response time of 34 ms for the Vipre Internet Shield VPN, which is amply sufficient for most activities. For response speed, lower is better. The best VPNs like AdGuard VPN achieved a 7 ms response time in our test.

  6. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      80
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      52
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇦🇱 Albania 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇲🇩 Moldova 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇷🇸 Serbia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey
North America 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇲🇽 Mexico 🇺🇸 USA
    South America 🇦🇷 Argentina 🇧🇷 Brazil 🇨🇱 Chile 🇨🇴 Colombia 🇵🇪 Peru
Asia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong 🇮🇳 India 🇮🇱 Israel 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇲🇾 Malaysia 🇸🇬 Singapore 🇦🇪 United Arab Emirates 🇹🇭 Thailand 🇹🇼 Taiwan
    Africa 🇿🇦 South Africa
Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

Vipre Internet Shield VPN gives users a choice of 80 servers in 52 countries. While the number of countries can be described as above average, the sheer number of servers is low in the context of other VPNs reviewed.

Traditionally, most Vipre Internet Shield VPN servers are located in Europe, but every continent is represented. Of the less common countries, servers are located in Albania, Croatia, Costa Rica, Peru, Argentina, and Thailand, to name a few. Servers in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are not absent from the list.

Of the countries with internet censorship, Vipre Internet Shield VPN has servers in Turkey, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.

Locations are listed alphabetically in the app, and Vipre Internet Shield VPN also offers a clear list of cities where servers are available. Given the fairly wide selection, it’s a shame that you can’t save individual countries as favorites. On some platforms, at least the option to connect to the last used location is available.

Servers specifically optimised for streaming platforms or torrenting are not available.

  7. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      No
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN offers only the basic security feature of DNS leak protection. This proved to work during testing when no DNS and IP addresses were compromised, keeping our real data hidden.

While the security-relevant kill switch is advertised on the website, we didn’t find it in any app. The kill switch ensures that the device is disconnected from the Internet in case of a sudden loss of connection to the VPN server, thus protecting the user’s real location and IP address from being disclosed.

The range of protocols includes OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IPSec and IKEv2. On some platforms, you can manually select a protocol, while others automatically use the best available. Each protocol has its own advantages and disadvantages, but for example PPTP and L2TP are already relatively obsolete and cannot be considered completely secure. Vipre Internet Shield VPN recommends using OpenVPN whenever possible.

The transmitted data is protected by 128-bit SSL encryption, which, while not the strongest on the market, can be considered secure enough given the time it takes to break it.

Advanced multi-hop connectivity is not available with Vipre Internet Shield VPN. The principle of multi-hop is to connect through two different VPN servers at the same time, thus ensuring a higher level of anonymity.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN also doesn’t offer Tor connections, for which NordVPN, for example, has dedicated servers. It also lacks two-factor authentication when logging into a user account.

  8. Vipre Internet Shield VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      No
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 50 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      Yes
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

While Vipre Internet Shield VPN doesn’t offer servers optimized for streaming video, it ranks among the better average in its ability to unblock content destined for select locations only.

In our test, it was able to successfully access video from YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO, and Hulu platforms. Foreign content could be watched instantly on Netflix and YouTube. We were also able to unblock HBO, Hulu, and Disney+ with Vipre Internet Shield VPN, however, we needed to test multiple servers. In Chrome and Safari, the browser’s anonymous mode helped us.

The average download speed of 111 Mb/s was sufficient for watching 4k videos by a wide margin. Playback was smooth and without stuttering.

We were only unsuccessful when trying to access video from the Amazon Prime Video platform, when a table asking to deactivate the VPN was displayed. NordVPN, for example, was able to handle making Amazon Prime videos available.

  9. Features of Vipre Internet Shield VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN serves primarily as a complement to antivirus, which is the company’s main product. Available features vary from platform to platform.

In addition, the Android app offers a scramble feature, which is similar to camouflage mode. Scramble disguises connections as normal ones, helping to bypass VPN blocking on streaming platforms, for example. The feature only works with the OpenVPN protocol.

The iOS app also has a Reconnect feature that reconnects the user to the VPN after the connection is dropped. It would work well in conjunction with a kill switch, which Vipre Internet Shield VPN does not offer.

Blocking ads, malware, and trackers is not a standard part of the Vipre Internet Shield VPN app. However, the relevant features may be included in other paid Vipre packages.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN also does not offer a static or dedicated IP address with a selectable location that is exclusive to a single user.

Additional products from Vipre Security Group can be added to the Vipre Internet Shield VPN for an additional fee, for example the best value “Ultimate Securite Bundle” includes:

    • Antivirus
    • Malware, spyware and ransomware blocking
    • Application scanner to detect malware
    • History erasing feature
    • Microphone and webcam protection
    • Dark Web monitoring to protect personal data from leakage
  10. Vipre Internet Shield VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

The Vipre Internet Shield VPN app for macOS developed an average workload. It stole approximately 50 MB from RAM, and the app took 0.1% of the battery and CPU capacity. Thus, when using the device, you basically can’t tell that the app is running.

If your computer is older or if you want to maximize its performance, you can turn the app off completely. For a faster start of your computer, we recommend disabling the automatic start of the Vipre Internet Shield VPN app.

  11. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN is sufficient for torrenting. While it does not offer any servers optimized for P2P sharing, it does not prohibit or restrict torrenting in any way.

Our measured download speed of 111 Mb/s and upload speed of 68 Mb/s is sufficient for torrenting. The VPN reliably hides the real IP address when torrenting, so it won’t be revealed to other users.

The best VPN for torrenting offers dedicated servers for this purpose, faster speeds and better security features. We can recommend NordVPN, CyberGhost VPN or Proton VPN Plus for this purpose.

  12. What Is the Country of Origin Of Vipre Internet Shield VPN?

    • VPN Provider: Ziff Davis, Inc.
    • Country of origin: 🇺🇸 USA

The provider of Vipre Internet Shield VPN is ThreatTrack Security, Inc. based in Clearwater, Florida, USA. It is a subsidiary of the Ziff Davis, Inc. group, which also operates the private networks StrongVPN and IPVanish VPN.

The Vipre division itself focuses on security software development, along with VPNs, offering antivirus, email security and threat detection to homes and businesses.

The operator’s US headquarters may pose a risk for some users, as it is a member country of the 5 Eyes alliance. The intelligence services of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand monitor Internet traffic and may request the release of information about specific users if necessary.

  13. Vipre Internet Shield VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      Yes
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

The privacy terms and conditions are somewhat opaque with Vipre Internet Shield VPN. The FAQ section states that the company doesn’t store any service usage data. The privacy policy, on the other hand, says that the app stores users’ IP addresses for the purposes of improving the service.

Along with the IP address, Vipre Internet Shield VPN stores the payment details used to pay for the subscription as well as the user’s name. Some competing VPN services work without entering this data, providing a higher level of privacy.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN shares users’ personal data with selected third parties when consent is given. Among these, it explicitly mentions, for example, advertising agencies, data analysis companies or government authorities, if the operator is ordered to do so by a court.

The mobile app still stores logs of usage, which can then be sent to technical support for help in solving the problem. Storage can optionally be turned off.

According to available information, Vipre Internet Shield VPN has not been audited for data security. The provider does not publish either a Transparency Report or a Warrant Canary, which could help to increase trust in the service. However, there have been no data leaks so far.

Overall, Vipre Internet Shield VPN can be considered a solid service backed by a large multinational company that specializes in cybersecurity.

  14. Vipre Internet Shield VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

Customer support is only available through a form on the Vipre Internet Shield VPN website. Communication through it is confusing and slow, and we always waited several days for answers to our test questions. Some questions were not answered at all.

Although the site states 24/7 support availability, we didn’t encounter anything like this. Live chat with support is not available.

Unusual among VPNs is the customer support available over the phone. Phone numbers are available in the US, UK, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and can be called from anywhere in the world. There is additionally a knowledge base available on the Vipre Internet Shield VPN website, but because VPNs are not the company’s main product, information is limited.

  15. Vipre Internet Shield VPN FAQ

Is Vipre Internet Shield VPN free?
Vipre Internet Shield VPN is a paid service, the price of the most affordable subscription option is $4.68 per month. Trial version is not available. The only way to try the service for free is to pay for it and then take advantage of the 30 days of money-back guarantee. Refunds are handled by customer support.
Is Vipre Internet Shield VPN secure?
The group behind the development of Vipre Internet Shield VPN is Ziff Davis, Inc. which deals with cybersecurity among other things. Rather than a standalone product, the VPN works as an add-on to an antivirus program.

Vipre Internet Shield VPN gives the user a choice of several protocols, including OpenVPN, and the transmitted data is protected by 128-bit encryption. The major security features missing are kill switch, whitelisting and multi-hop connectivity. For most users, the service offers a sufficient level of protection.

Is Vipre Internet Shield VPN suitable for streaming?
Vipre Internet Shield VPN successfully unblocked most streaming platforms in our test, including Netflix, YouTube, Disney Plus, and HBO. It only had problems with Amazon Prime, which it couldn’t unblock. Our measured download speed of 111 Mb/s would be sufficient for playing 4k video. For this, a threshold of at least 50 Mbps is stated as necessary.
