Le VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 4 Pros

Le VPN 2024 Review: 4 Cons and 4 Pros

5.6
★★☆
  1. Le VPN Offers Minimal Features and Collects Sensitive User Data

    • The app collects large amounts of personal data
    • Offers minimal advanced features
    • Lacks an independent security audit
    • VPN can only be used on 5 devices simultaneously
    • Servers are available in 75 different countries
    • Simple and clear application
    • Trial version on 7 days for free
    • Very good download (138 Mb/s) and upload (126 Mb/s)

The Le VPN is originally a French service that relocated to Hong Kong in 2012, where there is more lenient legislation related to the retention of user data. However, given China’s growing influence and its heavy government censorship, this may pose a problem in the future. The Le VPN has undergone very thorough testing by the VPN wiki, where it received a relatively low 5.6/10, which places it at 80. among 90 reviewed VPNs.

It lost the most points in the Le VPN rating due to collecting large amounts of personal information. The service collects IP addresses of users and servers used when in use. To ensure the maximum level of privacy and security, we recommend choosing one of the audited VPNs such as NordVPN, Surfshark or Proton VPN Plus.

Compared to competing services, Le VPN offers only a minimum of features. The application lacks whitelisting, split tunneling, multi-hop connections, and the ability to block ads. In a test of unlocking video from streaming platforms, Le VPN fell short to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The number of 700 servers available at Le VPN is more of an average, while the 75 of different sites can be considered a competitive advantage.

During testing, the Le VPN application worked without stuttering and there was not much to complain about. It’s clear and simple to use, the VPN connection was fast and didn’t put excessive strain on the device. Measured download (138 Mb/s) and upload (126 Mb/s) speeds were sufficient for most activities.

The subscription price Le VPN starts at $2.90 per month, which is comparable to other services. However, NordVPN or Surfshark offer a range of premium features and guarantee a high level of security by not storing logs from VPN usage.

With one paid account, Le VPN can be used on 5 devices simultaneously. This is below average compared to other VPNs, for example, with Surfshark you can connect with 999 devices.

The Le VPN app is directly available for Windows and macOS computers and for Android and iOS mobile devices.

The Le VPN can also be used on Linux computers and Chromebooks, but requires a special activation procedure described on the website. The advantage of Le VPN is that it supports traffic on selected routers, where all devices connected to the same network can be effectively protected, including those that are not directly accessible. Routers with pre-installed VPN protection can be purchased through the partner e-shop Le VPN.

Direct use on Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV or Roku smart TVs, Playstation and Xbox gaming consoles or alternative Raspberry Pi devices is not supported.

The browser extension Le VPN does not.

  4. Le VPN App: User-friendliness, whitelist, server selection…

    • App Languages: 🇺🇸 English +4 more🇫🇷 French 🇷🇺 Russian 🇪🇸 Spanish 🇮🇹 Italian
    • Whitelisting:
      No
Whitelisting is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs

Le VPN doesn’t offer too many features, so controlling the app is relatively easy. The graphical design of the app is perhaps a bit too austere and from a subjective point of view could use some care. Only a light theme is available, a dark alternative is missing. The environment is available in 5 different languages, including English.

The list of servers is displayed in a simple list, which is sorted alphabetically or grouped by continent. The function to connect to the nearest location is missing for Le VPN. Selected servers can be marked with an asterisk to place them among your favorites.

Among the missing features is whitelist, which would be able to route selected applications directly to the Internet, while others would go through the VPN server.

In the application settings Le VPN, it is possible to enable automatic connection to the VPN when the device is started, or to set the kill switch to work. The advantage for more experienced users is the possibility to choose from a relatively wide range of VPN protocols.

  5. Le VPN Connection Speed: Upload, Download & Latency

    • Traffic limit: Unlimited

    Download speed

    Upload speed

    Server latency

Le VPN, like all paid VPNs, does not limit users by the amount of data transferred. Connecting to the VPN server was fast during testing, even with remote servers.

We achieved an average download speed with Le VPN when testing the data transfer speeds with 138 Mb/s. Such speeds are normally sufficient for streaming ultra-high resolution 4k video as well as for downloading bulky files.

The average upload speed achieved 126 Mb/s can also be considered excellent and quite sufficient for torrenting, for example.

The response speed of the servers was on average 34 ms. The value was marginally sufficient for online gaming or video chatting without any annoying lags. For server response, as opposed to transfer speeds, a lower value is always better. However, the best VPNs performed even better in the test. The AdGuard VPN we measured averaged 7 ms, and the response speed of Atlas VPN Pro was 11 ms.

  6. Le VPN Server Locations

    • Number of servers:
      700
The average number of servers for the reviewed VPNs is 1699.
    • Number of countries:
      75
The average number of countries available for the reviewed VPNs is 41.
    Europe 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇧🇾 Belarus 🇧🇬 Bulgaria 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇲🇹 Malta 🇲🇩 Moldova 🇩🇪 Germany 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇮🇲 Isle of Man 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇦🇹 Austria 🇷🇴 Romania 🇬🇷 Greece 🇲🇰 Northern Macedonia 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇷🇸 Serbia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇺🇦 Ukraine

Oceania 🇦🇺 Australia 🇳🇿 New Zealand

The Le VPN private network gives users a choice of 700 servers in 75 countries around the world.

While the number of servers is rather below average in the context of other VPNs, the range of locations is very good. At least one server is located on every continent, with most of them allocated in Europe and Asia. Of the less traditional countries, Le VPN has servers in Belarus, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and the Isle of Man.

The Le VPN also has servers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Of the countries with state censorship, servers are available in Russia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

According to customer support, all servers are physically located in the countries in question. Physical servers can generally be considered more secure and stable than virtual servers, and also tend to have a higher success rate in circumventing the geo-block.

The Le VPN uses specific rules for P2P sharing, this type of activity is only available on selected servers. They are located in the Czech Republic, Canada, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Poland. A complete list of servers with a list of supported protocols is available at Le VPN.

Servers specifically dedicated for streaming or supporting multi-hop connections are not available.

  7. Le VPN Security Features: DNS Leak Protection, Kill Switch…

    • DNS leak protection :
      Yes
DNS leak protection is offered by 92% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Kill Switch:
      Yes
Kill Switch is supported by 87% of the reviewed VPNs.
    • Multi-Hop:
      No
Multi-Hop connection is offered by 20 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Tor:
      No
Tor support is offered by 19 % of the reviewed VPNs.

The Le VPN application protects users from DNS, WebRTC and IP address leaks. During the testing of the service, all our real data remained hidden.

Among other security features, Le VPN only offers a kill switch that disconnects the device from the Internet when the connection to the VPN server fails. This procedure prevents possible disclosure of the user’s real IP address and location. Once VPN protection is restored, the Internet connection is re-established.

In the settings Le VPN the protocol used can be selected, modern WireGuard and OpenVPN are available, as well as the nowadays obsolete L2TP, IPSec and IKEv2. The transmitted data is protected by 256-bit encryption, which is considered the most secure on the market.

The Le VPN also supports HybridVPN, which combines VPN protection and fast connectivity via SmartDNS. It can be used to unblock foreign streaming platform libraries, for example.

Multi-hop, where the app connects via two different VPN servers simultaneously, is not available with Le VPN. Similarly, support for using VPNs on the Tor network is missing.

The user account Le VPN optionally protects two-factor security, requiring a one-time code along with the password when logging in.

  8. Le VPN & Streaming: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime…

    • Amazon Prime:
      No
Amazon Prime streaming is supported by 52 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Disney+:
      Yes
Disney+ streaming is supported by 53 % of reviewed VPNs
    • HBO:
      Yes
HBO streaming is supported by 57 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Hulu:
      Yes
Hulu streaming is supported by 49 % of reviewed VPNs
    • Netflix:
      No
Netflix streaming is supported by 67 % of reviewed VPNs
    • YouTube:
      Yes
YouTube streaming is supported by 97 % of reviewed VPNs

Le VPN doesn’t run servers optimized for unblocking streaming video, however, a dedicated HybridVPN DNS feature is used for this purpose.

In our test of unblocking foreign libraries, Le VPN had mixed results. We were unable to access US content on the most popular platform Netflix. While the site itself could be loaded, Netflix ironically locked out content that was commonly available on our actual site. It did not make any other content available.

Amazon Prime even revealed that we were using a VPN, and didn’t allow us to play the video at all. We successfully unblocked US-only content on YouTube, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Hulu.

The average download speed achieved in testing (138 Mb/s) is sufficient for playing ultra-high resolution 4k video. For this, a download speed of at least 50 Mbps is usually specified as necessary.

To unblock the foreign Netflix library, we recommend using NordVPN or Surfshark. Both have been able to access all streaming platforms, have the stable speed needed for ultra-high resolution, and also guarantee an excellent level of security.

  9. Features of Le VPN: AdBlock, Static IP…

    • Blocks Ads:
      No
Ad blocking is offered by 44 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Malware:
      No
Malware blocking is offered by 33 % of the VPNs reviewed.
    • Blocks Trackers:
      No
Trackers blocking is offered by 38 % of the VPNs reviewed.

Le VPN doesn’t offer any extra features. Even the relatively common ad blocking, malware and tracker blocking is not available.

A dedicated IP address is not available with Le VPN, even at an additional cost. Other VPN providers offer it, such as NordVPN or Surfshark. Unlike a regular address, a dedicated IP address is not shared between multiple users, so it can be used to provide secure access to internal systems, for example.

Among the missing features is also a camouflage mode that can mask the activated VPN protection from, for example, the ISP. The private network can then be used, for example, in China and other places where this is normally problematic. Of the services reviewed, the camouflage mode is offered by PrivateVPN, for example.

Monitoring for leaks of personal data to the Internet or dark web is also not provided by Le VPN.

  10. Le VPN‘s CPU usage and App Performance

When using the Le VPN app for macOS, we did not experience any issues with device slowdown. The application used approximately 0.2% of the computing power and 0.3% of the battery of the test Macbook Air laptop. It bit off around 130 MB from the RAM memory Le VPN, which is admittedly more than the best VPNs, but at the same time, the value is comparable to, say, WhatsApp.

If you think Le VPN is slowing down your computer, you can turn it off completely via the icon in the system tray. If you’re not using the app right now, it’s still running in the background. In addition, you can disable the automatic switching on of the application when the device boots, which slows down the computer slightly.

  11. Le VPN Torrenting Servers

    • Torrenting servers:
      Yes
Torrenting support is offered by 89 % of the reviewed VPNs.

Le VPN supports torrenting only on selected servers located in the Czech Republic, Canada, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Poland. According to the terms of service, P2P data sharing is not possible on other servers.

All common clients can be used for torrenting, including uTorrent and bitTorrent. Our measured average download 138 Mb/s and upload 126 Mb/s speeds are sufficient for transferring legal files. The kill switch function protects the user during use.

According to the usage policy, you must not Le VPN use the VPN for illegal activities, which includes sharing copyrighted files. Although Le VPN does not store logs, it may release data it has on users if requested by authorities or if it suspects violations of the law.

  12. What is the country of origin of Le VPN?

    • VPN Provider: VTNV Solutions Limited
    • Country of origin: 🇭🇰 Hong Kong

The operator of Le VPN is VTNV Solutions Limited, which was founded in Hong Kong in 2012. The history of Le VPN goes back even further, the service was launched by a group of cybersecurity and anti-censorship enthusiasts from France in 2010.

VTNV Solutions Limited continues to take an active stance against censorship, offering free VPN accounts to journalists and citizens from Russia, Belarus and other countries plagued by state censorship, for example. The company also supports Reporters Without Borders and sponsors various hackathons and other cybersecurity projects.

Although Hong Kong is not part of the 14 Eyes alliance, the company’s headquarters in the country has raised concerns among some users. This is due to the strong influence of nearby China and the risk that its security forces could get access to users’ data. The risk is compounded by the fact that the operator Le VPN stores users’ real IP addresses, for example.

  13. Le VPN and Privacy: Logging Policy, Security Issues…

    • No-Logs Policy:
      No
The No-Logs Policy is followed by 78% of reviewed VPNs.

The level of privacy provided by Le VPN is significantly lower compared to NordVPN, Proton VPN Plus and some other services.

The Le VPN stores sensitive information including IP addresses of users and servers used, connection times, and volume of data transferred. The company states that although it is not legally obliged to collect this data, it uses it to improve its services. The data is retained for an unspecified period of time, which, especially in conjunction with the Hong Kong headquarters, can be considered a fairly significant security risk.

In addition, the operator Le VPN may share the collected data with third parties in the event of a sale of the company or a court challenge. According to the terms of service, the operator may, in exceptional cases, require a copy of the user’s ID to verify his identity before using the VPN. Although the document is supposed to be deleted immediately after identity verification, this practice completely contradicts the privacy protection we expect from VPN services.

Payment for subscriptions is facilitated by third parties who are responsible for processing personal data, but it cannot be used for commercial purposes.

To the best of our knowledge, Le VPN is not audited by an independent company, and there is no Transparency Report or Warrant Canary available on the service’s website. The latter is used by some VPNs as evidence that the operator has not handed over user data to the court or the police.

  14. Le VPN Support: Chat, e-mail…

The Le VPN uses a ticketing system for customer support. Requests can be sent either via the contact form on the site, or to the email address info@le-vpn.com.

Logs are available in the Le VPN application and can be attached to the request to facilitate problem analysis.

There is also an AI chat available on the Le VPN website, which was able to answer our test queries quite decently. Live chat with support is not available with this service.

For quick troubleshooting, you can read the knowledge base, where detailed tutorials are published for installing VPNs on different types of devices.

  15. Le VPN FAQ

How to get Le VPN for free?
You can only get Le VPN for free on 7 days as part of the trial version for Android and iOS mobile devices.

After the trial period, you must purchase a subscription for one month, one year or two years. The two-year subscription is the best value, with a per-month price of $2.90. All orders are covered by a money-back guarantee of 30 days.

    Is Le VPN secure?
The Le VPN supports the secure protocols WireGuard, OpenVPN and the now obsolete IPSec, IKEv2 and L2TP. In conjunction with 256-bit encryption, the data itself is well protected when using the Internet.

In terms of privacy levels, Le VPN has quite significant shortcomings in terms of user data retention. The application collects data about users’ Internet activity, including their IP address or the IP addresses of the servers they use. To ensure the highest level of privacy, we recommend giving preference to a vetted VPN service such as NordVPN audited by PwC or ExpressVPN, which has been audited by KPMG and Cure53.

    Is Le VPN legal?
Using a VPN generally increases security on the internet. Connections with active protection are encrypted and the network administrator, ISP or hackers on public wi-fi networks will not be able to see what the user is looking at on the internet or what sites they are visiting.

VPN use is legal in most of the world, but can be problematic in China, Russia, North Korea and other countries with strong government censorship.

Most VPN providers, including Le VPN, directly state in their terms and conditions that the app cannot be used for illegal activities, such as sharing copyrighted content. In case of a violation of the condition, the VPN operator can hand over personal data to the police or the court.
